Even The Biggest Of Bands Have Their Humble Beginnings

Even the biggest of bands have their humble beginnings. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd didn't just pop out of the ground world famous. Though not in the same stratosphere in terms of fame, alternative rock band, The Cranberries, were not different in this aspect. They were formed in 1989 as The Cranberry Saw Us by brothers, Noel and Mike Hogan, as well as drummer Fergal Lawler in Limerick, Ireland. Originally, their vocalist was man going by the name of Niall Quinn. Niall quit the band a year later, but not before recommending a friend of his girlfriend's, Dolores O'Riordan. Delores was quickly chosen to become The Cranberries' (they opted for a name change as well) new singer and the rest is history. The Cranberries soon got a record deal with Island Records and by 1992, were recording their debut album Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can't We.The Cranberries have always been a fairly mellow, yet upbeat band. But Everybody Else focuses more on the mellow aspect of the band's music. Songs like the hit Linger or I Still Do showcase the relaxing, dreamy element very well. The album runs on a healthy dose of emotion, not only limited to Dolores' excellent vocal delivery, but is also shown through Noel Hogan's effective guitar lines. Noel doesn't focus on creating a bombastic bridge, chorus or guitar solo through his guitar playing, but instead uses it as a valuable addition to the songs rhythm section which backs up O'Riordan. Many of the tracks, from Dreams to Sunday to Linger to How, feature this simple, yet fun acoustic passages which do an very good job in contributing to the dreamy atmosphere of the record. Mike Hogan is another musician who stands out. His bass is quite audible and like the guitars, it maintains a simple, yet effective rhythm in which the calm songs stem from. One thing I noticed about Everybody Else is that it feels very laidback. Aside from perhaps the song How, there aren't any tracks similar to the likes of Forever Yellow Skies, I Just Shot John Lennon, or Time is Ticking Out, where a frantic pace dominates the song. This element isn't a bad thing, but the lack of such an aspect is certainly notable as it creates a different atmosphere throughout the album. Perhaps calmer outings such as Not Sorry and I Still Do are more reflective of the band's surroundings at the time. The Cranberries were nowhere near as busy during the crafting of Everybody Else as they were during the likes of To the Faithfully Departed or even No Need to Argue, as they were still quite a small band. Whatever the reason, while perhaps not as catchy as future tracks, the songs on Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We feel more refined and perfected than post-No Need to Argue songs.Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We is an excellent album from alt rockers, The Cranberries, and a very superb debut. Through its calm, laidback, nostalgic moods, it creates a very likeable atmosphere. It has both brisk songs like How and Wanted, but also slower, mellower offerings like Linger and Sunday. An easy album to get into, it features effective, engaging performances from band members. Whether it be through Dolores' impressive vocals, Noel's fun, jangly guitar riffs, the fitting bass guitar antics of Mike, or even the decent drumming of Fergal Lawler, the band manages to create an enjoyable collection of songs in which fans of alt rock should definitely enjoy. Everybody Else is a fine album, and an essential Cranberries' release.

Every LP should get this treatment!

I'm not going to review the music itself because if you're reading this, you are already familiar with every fantastic note on this record. Instead, I'm going to tell you about the quality of the materials made to create this vinyl release. If you've bought any new vinyl records in the last few years, you may have noticed that while the quality of the vinyl itself has improved (particularly with 180g releases), but the outer jackets are cheap garbage (and I'm being generous here). The paper/cardboard used in these new releases are thin and warp easily - they all feel like they could rip with the slightest provocation. I know good quality jackets weren't universal in the 80s (the US seems to have had the best jackets, which is suprising since we never gave up having to use adapters in our 45s even though every other country abandoned that), but those of us in North America got pretty used to having record sleeves that didn't tear, rip, or warp if you so much as glanced at them sideways. Even the more expensive albums released now have crappy jackets, which is infuriating. If I'm paying $180 for a box set, Sade, I want sleeves that don't suck, mmmkay???Analog Spark has proven with their releases that there is no reason for crappy jackets. The jacket that ships with this album, is what is known as a Stoughton tip-on jacket. It's glossy, twice as sturdy as other jackets, and most importantly, it's shaped to fit the actual record inside. It's not just a cardboard sleeve, it has an actual spine so the sleeve doesn't pucker at all.The vinyl itself is top of the line 180g vinyl and the remastering is excellent. If you love this record as much as I do, buy this version. I'm hoping to see more releases of my favorite records to come out of Analog Spark in the future!

One of the best albums of the 90’s

What more can be said that has not been said. Stylistically unique, acoustically pleasing work that will leave you nostalgic for younger years.

A classic, still blows your mind 25 years later

Not much that I can say that you probably dont know about this album...its awesome. The vinyl I received was dead flat, clean and scratch free. This puppy oozes of anaolog magic. Its got the sound you want from a record, the reason you spin instead of stream. The remaster sounds great the mix is spot on. The vinyl is quiet no issues.Typical of many albums a paper sleeve. I have a bit of a ritual now, I cut the edge to get the record out but keep the shrink. Then I pull the record and shoot it with a zerostat before I transfer to a high quality sleeve. Then I out the paper sleeve back inside empty and put the record and jacket in its own sleeve. Its an investment and I try to treat them as such.A must buy, dont regret it and wait!

Buyer beware

This was either very badly mishandled or a very shoddy release of this album. Vinyl arrived badly scuffed, and the inner sleeve has a large area that is simply coming apart, or possibly was never glued in the first place. I'm not going to try to mail it back to England, which is apparently the only way to get a refund, so I'm just stuck with it.The album itself is fantastic, and I guess I'll have to buy it again someday in a better pressing. Just really sucks after waiting for a brand new item to come, it arrives in such bad shape.

Finally available after being out of print on vinyl. ...

Finally available after being out of print on vinyl. I've waited a long time for this to be available. And it was definitely worth the wait. Notable richness of sound compared to the cd. If you can find it.... Don't hesitate.

Bought on a nostalgia trip...

I had this album when I was on my early 20's and listened to it on a loop. I thought I'd replace it having given it away some years ago to a charity shop. It's still as good as I remember. Very good seller too, good value for money and fast delivery.

Get this to start or add to your cranberries collection!

Thoroughly excellent album with some brilliant tracks on it. Worth getting a few of the cranberries earlier albums to get a taste of what's to come and this is an ideal starting point.
