Thought provoking
My GP recommended this book to me as one she had read and liked. I have endocrine problems (Hashimoto's) and was having symptoms that could have indicated further issues. After reading the book, I felt more educated and empowered to talk with my Endocrinologist about my concerns. I even took the book with me to my appt and my Endocrinologist was interested enough in the contents that she purchased her own copy. The concepts in this book aren't for someone just starting out with an endocrine disorder but are more geared towards those of us who have struggled for years and want more than what we are currently getting. Spoiler alert - this book doesn't give you a ton of faith in traditional doctors and has a lot of warnings about the battles you will likely face by being a patient with a mild case of a particular disease. It is a sad truth about the current state of managed healthcare. And practitioners who follow the beliefs of this book can be both hard to find and expensive to pay for out of pocket. But the book is a great read and will give you excellent info for starting a discussion with your doctor.

I am fat fuzzy
Review by: Cyndi Lenz RN Skip's Pharmacy [...]Last year at Halloween I found this little troll that would scream this blood-curling scream when you pressed the belly. I brought it into the pharmacy and put a little note on it that said "Cyndi without her hormones." I left it on the front counter for all to see. Much to Jamie's chagrin folks would press and then have a good laugh. We would all giggle then we would connect because as funny as it was many of us felt that way inside. It comes from years of wandering around and being afraid to be labeled a wingnut by your local medical establishment. It comes from feeling really awful and not wanting to feel that way anymore. You see I am fat fuzzy and frazzled. Iím also quit sick of it. Iím at a crossroad in my life. I do not want to do this anymore. I am psychically painful to myself and the people around me. In other words I can be a total bitch. Not always. But once I get cranking its unstoppable bitchdom.I can't sleep. I feel crappy. I've been doing this menopause thing for two years. I've been on hormones. Off hormones. I've taken supplements. I changed my diet. I try to exercise. I try to cut down on the "bad" things I do. All these things help me. I feel better. I could feel much better-it just takes a little work. What I loved about this book is it that it felt very empowering. It gives us many stages and choices to take back our lives and bodies and get rid of "that other person" that has taken over.As most health care practitioners , I have a difficult time taking care of myself. Its very easy to spout what is good for and not take that advice myself. While reading this book it was all I could do to refrain from pulling out my colored markers and take notes. (I was reading Dr Shame's copy and I really didn't think he would appreciate that). Some of the stuff I had been doing and some I was thinking about doing but the book gave me a sensical order to go in. The book is very short, sweet and very easy to understand. As a nurse who loves to create teaching material I love the visual because it brings a very complex situation into a very understandable place. Instead of just giving you information and then leaving on your own to figure it out this book gives you to tools to access yourself and many options on how to proceed. The Shames give you some things you can start doing right now. Then they get into typing and you can see where the focus should be. You can evaluate yourself. They give you intermediate rebalancing tools and finally what to avoid how to achieve long term success. All the chapters have summaries and actions plans,a definite nurse's touch, and I think this really make a huge difference.Whenyour fat fuzzy and/or frazzeled its hard to stay organized.I'm really looking forward to feeling better

This Book Can Help You Take Back Control of Your Life
I'm a mid 40s over-achiever who has had a hard life from childhood on. Holding my own and doing well after my graduation from the school hard knocks I found myself in a stressful relationship with my dreams disappearing but I was still plugging along because I had a promising career. I decided to make some changes to take back control in one aspect of my life and it seemed like someone was on the other end playing spin the bottle and poof, I was a complete and total stress-ball who could not function. I could barely get myself to work, wasn't sleeping and the doctors had me on sleeping pills at night, ADHD and anti-anxiety medications during the day, I could no longer tolerate breads, milk, aspartame, and other foods so I was on a strict healthy diet but the weight kept coming. It seems like I was sick with something every other week. I had my adrenals tested with saliva test through an alternative doctor at least a year before & they were flat lined and I brought the results to my doctor and and then an endocrinologist and got laughed out of the office. Blood work was always on low end but still within that HUGE - NORMAL - range. I was getting b y day by day reading, talking to my doctor trying to reduce my stress and in some ways I was getting better, some ways getting worse so I remembered that adrenal test and I stopped by my local health foods store and I found a supplement and tried it and it worked. I went from barely having energy to get dressed to having energy to fold laundry. Hungry for more, I started looking for more information and then I found this book. It arrived in my mailbox and by the next day I had read it almost through. I was at the reference section. I love this book ... I bought more copies and gave them away to doctors and friends. It is the best baseline book for understanding what the helk has been going on for so long. It's layout could be a little more friendly for the frustrated but I believe it does point you where you need to go adequately. It talks in layman's terms and certainly empowers you to take back your life. I am reading Adrenal Fatigue now but I FFF has better resources and insight for each type so that you can focus on what you need to get better. This book is changing my life and helping me to take it back so that I can live once again.
