Channel 4's champion of local organic food, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall returns to River Cottage to harvest the best that autumn has to offer, from sea to forest, from orchard to kitchen garden. This DVD includes a wonderful array of tempting recipes to inspire and salivate over, from stuffed and roasted belly of pork to spicy lamb curries and plenty of puddings too! All the season's best are here, whether home grown or shop bought. Hugh also catches up with the Bristol smallholders he first met in River Cottage Spring, as they try their hand making their own faggots, sausages and goat's cheese. And in true Hugh style there's plenty of River Cottage parties, from a fully foraged four-course dinner, complete with oysters, squirrel and home brew, to a fun and food filled Duck Fair and a rowdy Bonfire night

Get this Series - it is Excellent
I am so glad that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (Hugh F-W) has done it again. This Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter series is fantastic and does not reprise his first Escape, Return and Forever River Cottage series, or his Pig-in-a-Day, Fish-in-a-Day series. The Landshare idea is one that should be shared the world over. And one that supermarket chains need to look at. All over people are reacting to the "perfect-but-tasteless-tomato", the bananas that look fantastic, but are blackened two days after purchase, the chicken meat that you have to slather in BBQ sauce or soy sauce or something for it to have any flavour. The waste of discarding the "slightly imperfect" is criminal, unbelievably inefficient across the food chain and also weakens the strength of diversity that our survival on this planet depends upon. Hugh just manages to strike the necessary balance in this series between showing us great gardening, live-stock raising and wonderful cooking techniques and his quest to change damning and self-destructive attitudes and behaviours in the food production and sales industry.

Hugh samples seasonal food
In keeping with the previous Spring series this latest River Cottage offering is less about Hugh's attempts to maintain a small-holding and run a business than about what others can do with their own plot of land. He matches up people with land but with no enthusiasm to grow their own food with people with the enthusiasm but no land. This Landshare concept is a simple and worthy idea that creates an interesting structure to a program that could otherwise feel as if it's going over old ground. The novices' gradual successes and problems are fun to watch and these are interspersed with the usual challenges such as making a banquet only out of things that have been foraged. Exactly how useful this all is as a guide to being self-sufficient I don't know, but it's certainly entertaining and provides one of the few chances you'll ever have to see squirrel ragout.
