Shop Reference for Students & Apprentices (Volume 1)

I got it for the references but I am new to this
While the book does have some minor areas where edits are required, I found the book did help me for my needs. I am pretty much new to shop work and this is more for hobby and common sense. I figure all men should know the tools they carry and the ones they need. While I had a broad idea of shop references, measurements and exact nomenclature were lost to me unless I had the part on hand. This book is but the beginning for me in regards to reference material, but I do like the compact size which makes it handy to drop in my go bag or to have on the work bench shelf. Maybe the price was a bit steep, but I needed it and Amazon delivered as promise.

Had to Replace-Had to have
This is a very handy Shop Reference book for a student or a journeyman machinest. A shorter version of the Machinery Handbook with many references of threads, cutting speeds and feeds depending on cutting tool and material used, and a lot lighter in weight than the Machinery Handbook in a book bag. I lost my other one on a camping trip this past May 2012, and had to get it replaced. A friend suggested Amazon as a place to reclaim another copy of this book. It was quite easy to find and locate at Amazon and I recieved my replacement book on the second day after ordering. I find that the replacement cost to be cheaper than I originally paid through a College Book Store of Barnes and Nobles to begin with. If your into saving money as I am,I'd recommend checking with Amazon and their prices before buying books through a College book store first! Saves gas as well, for there delivered to your front door! Thank you Amazon.

A staple for hobby machining.
This is the standard machine shop reference book for machinist or anyone machining. It is widely used in machine shops and Universities and is a condensed version of The Machinists Handbook.Pros:Reliable reference for machining.Easy to understand.Compact.Good for most machining applications in hobby machining.Cons :Hard to navigate.Too much information for most students.Suggested Improvements :Add some type of tab system to easily find sections or have a dedicated section for frequently used information.Overall :Good for most applications. This is really the standard reference for most Universities so you may be stuck there. For professional machining you'll probably need to have the full Machinists Handbook.

Handy little book for the tool box
I keep this book in my toolbox at work. It has the vital information I need for around the shop such as feed and speed rates for the lathe and mill, broaching and drilling, indexing. Plenty of useful information concerning screw threads, keys and keyseats, allowances and tolerances in english and metric, inspection, and tons of the math needed for geometry and trig. Way too much information to list. Excellent book. This information comes from the "Machinery's Handbook" and other sources but is smaller and fits nicely in the top of my toolbox.

It's a book that willl follow you for years.
While the title says "for students and apprentices", this book is an EXCELLENT basic ref book - and small enough to fit in a toolbox. I'd lve to see indexed pages for sections (makes fast look-ups difficult), had to add my own "tabbies"... but I keep grabbing it over and over. Surprising how its got the answer you need - RIGHT THERE! It sits on my bench, and was the best buy I made in quite a while!

Better have good reading glasses
Very nice book alot of information only downfall is that if your over 40 you'll need good reading glasses. The print is very small.

Very informative!
Was a required purchased for college class, but definitely will be a great tool going forward as well. My Father & Grandfather were also very impressed with how much information it contains!!

Get your magnifier out!
Chock full of all the basic info you need straight from machinery's handbook. Print is small just like in MH, but the type is crisp and legible.
