Is this suitable for heavy duty use, i.e. to use in a take-a-way grill?

They seem very sturdy and dense to me.

Are these still working well so far? by the way lou davey, is your bbq an outback model? looks similar to my outback apollo.

Yes these are still working very well and we’ve used our bbq quite a few times since purchasing.

Will 40 cover area of 4 burner bbq?

It depends how tightly packed you want them. 40 should be OK provided you don't want them very tightly packed. Sorry I can't be of more help. I had a 3-burner BBQ and preferred ceramic stones to lava rock. I now have a 3-burner with flovouriser bars so no need for either.

How big are each one?

5 cm by 5 cm. note that these are not square, slightly curved on two sides.Thickness, 2.5 cm at centre.
