The GOOD Dinosaur. Not The Great Dinosaur.
The Good Dinosaur is visually remarkable and inspired, but is not a kids film. I'm a 16 male, and a proud PIXAR fanboy (I loved Inside Out) but The Good Dinosaur just isn't as many of the others. The plot is very basic, Arlo gets lost and has to find his way home and encounters several other characters on the way, some good, some bad. It sounds simple because it is. It's not particularly funny, either. The Good Dinosaur stands out in two places: it is visually beautiful - the animation is incredibly realistic and just stunning; the other thing is the theme of death and loss, which provides several emotional scenes. I said before that this is not a kids film - not due to the violence and bad morals as other reviews suggest (I don't think small children would particularly pay attention to some of this violence as it is mostly all played for minor laughs), but because these two good points are not typically appreciated by small children. How many little kids come watch a film and say "wow, the visuals of that film were remarkable"? And the main theme of loss might confuse or upset children. I enjoyed it, but I can tell that it's not the sort of film for everyone.

One of our favourite Disney/Pixar films
This visually stunning movie is one of our most beloved Disney films. Our children watched it over and over again from the age of 4 and it triggered a long lasting dinosaur fascination with our our son, several years later he is quite an expert in the field. To my surprise the Good Dinosaur only god mixed reviews when it was released. Probably because the many Pixar fans didn’t appreciate a movie that was primarily aimed at children and told from a children’s perspective. Quite a shame, since first of all it might incorrectly urge Disney to place its bets on the umpteenth standard princess movie rather than explore new themes and characters. Secondly, this is simply a brilliant, beautiful little story that has lots of emotion and fun in it.Yes there is loss, as one of Arlo’s parent dies. And this is what a lot of the puritan age-recommended sites and reviews struggle with. But come on.. life is about loss and there is a good chance young children in their family or in their surrounding experience loss, if you chose to shield them from that you’ll set them up for bigger trauma in later life. I think Disney handled this very well, perhaps even better than in Dumbo, The Lion King or Up.The straight forward storyline is about a clumsy, frightened apatosaurus Arlo that gets separated from his family. An incredibly funny growling cave-boy helps him to find his way back home. During their journey they run into a range of dinosaurs and they have to face a series of challenges - it’s almost a pre-historic on-the-road movie. The obligatory messages are there as well. This time there is a whole range as its about loss, overcoming fears, tolerance, friendship, and perseverance. Even so it remains an excellent movie that we all enjoyed greatly while watching with our young children. We bought the movie in its 3D version as we have very good equipment to play that. And our children are quite used to wearing the glasses. The movie is even more immersive and beautiful in 3D but a regular Blu ray version is included in the set as well.
