Filtered water is best but straight tap water works fine. Use warm water to slow freezing process and create clear ice balls.

Yes, it holds the unit together. It freezes from the top down forcing the air bubbles in the water to the bottom.

Q: Is the bottom made of styrofoam or plastic?

Plastic. Pretty well made. PITA to get the frozen cubes out, but seems to function well enough.
