How to Machine Sew: Techniques and Projects for the Complete Beginner

Great book if like me a beginner helpful tips on sewing various projects and stitches also basics of threading ect would recommend.

This is an excellent book for sewing machine novices, it guides you easily through basic machine techniques. Which gives you the confidence to try more complex tasks

This is a very good book for beginners like me, and my children and grandchildren .

Pictures are hard to see what needs to be done at times. A useful book but not brilliant for the person who wants to learn the rudiments of sewing as a book that is a fast reference guide

I have not used a sewing machine for years - hardly since school - but I've got one and the thing terrifies me. I wanted a book which would take me through the basics of how it works, how to use it as in, for instance, how to get the tensions right. This is a large book, well laid out with superb line drawings that are large and clear and easy to follow, and with explanatory text beside each. The projects give you all the basics: seams, hems, zips, piping, gathers and more.This is, as it says, definitely for the complete beginner - the poor reviews left me nonplussed: what did they think it would be for?A well thought out and well presented book at a very reasonable price. Congratulations to Susie Johns.

This book is brilliantly written, simple, precise, well illustrated, most helpful to the beginner but also for those who have some knowledge in sewing. It covers all the details that tutors don't feel are important to mention. This book does exactly what it says!You are walked through the simpleast steps, getting to know your sewing machine again and reminded of every basic machine sewing technique you've forgotten.The writer makes no assumptions but she is not patronising either!Excellent drawings - you see at a glance what she wants you to understand. Beautiful layout. Unfussy, spacious and clear page design. The writer knows exactly what you need to see as a photo and what comes across better as a labelled drawing. She clearly has a lot of teaching experience.One great project showing precisely how to confront zippers, covered & uncovered! Zippers were always a headache for me.Lots of useful information about machine accessories, tools, fabrics.I will certainly practise every technique before I launch out on sewing again with my new machine.Re the projects - not every project will be for everyone. I won't be sewing the make up bag nor the fancy apron. Might try the strip quilt and the drawstring bag or laptop sleeve.But I will definitely be practising every technique & will keep examples for reference in a notebook as I did years ago when I started sewing.The more advanced books I used then are daunting for a returning beginner.This one is just perfect and I'm so grateful to Susie Johns for thinking it up.Will be looking for other sewing books she's written.Just buy it, if you are a returning sewer or a complete beginner. Or even if you just want to check on more abstruse matters like piping. Really helpful, thoughtfully designed and attractive book.
