A Must for Strength Training
This is 3 books in 1, so I will be evaluating each separately. They are: 1. Book #1: Strength Training Over 40 2. Book #2: Macro Diet 3. Book #3: Healthy Eating for Men In Book #1: Strength Training Over 40, Michael Smith states that his goal is to inform his readers how to find their fitness whys, discuss the easy ways they can boost their willpower and motivate themselves to exercise, and to show them the benefits of strength training at 40 and beyond. Below are the benefits he lists in this chapter: โ Maintain and rebuild muscle mass. โ Increase flexibility, strength, and balance. โ Promote healthy and strong bones. โ Improve brain health. โ Promote better sleep. โ Improve the lymphatic system of your body. โ Enhance your moods. โ Improve your sex life. He discusses each of the above benefit in great detail in terms of ways to boost willpower and self-control, whether or not you'll need equipment, preforming your exercises correctly, and he provides a lot of exercises for men and women, with nice pictures, indicating which muscle groups are being used. This book also provides a workout plan. In Book #2: Macro Diet, the author defines macro dieting. He states that this diet is also known as IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros) or flexible dieting, that this diet focus on consuming the macronutrients your body requires, and he lists the three macronutrients you require for maintaining your overall health and fitness. They are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. He discusses this diet in further details including its benefits, the main food groups, and in particular how you can figure out your macros including tracking them, meal planning, and the recipes, with pictures, provided are great. In Book #3: Healthy Eating for Men, the author focuses mostly on men who have reached the good age of midlife and continues with the careless nutritional and lifestyle habits of their younger years. He states that men need to recognize the changes that reaching this level of maturity inevitably brings, which he states are being susceptible to the age and gender-related health problems. He states that some of these problems may be heart diseases, cholesterol issues, triglycerides (a yellowish fat that accumulates in the blood when there is too much fat in the diet, especially saturated fat found in red meat, butter, and some cheeses), high blood pressure (also called hypertension), obesity, inactivity, smoking, alcohol, and type 2 Diabetes. He discusses recommended foods, what to drink, supplements, and in general just eating healthy. A nice bonus in this book are 15 additional easy and delicious recipes for your optimal health. They are based on the Mediterranean diet, that are for healthy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The author discusses each book in great detail. This review does not even come close to all the information covered, just a few highlighted points. I highly recommend this book to anyone, male or female, who are serious about strength training. Having the digital copy is great, but a hard copy has many benefits, especially, you can have sticky notes on pages with your favorite recipes. Plus, there are 100 pictures of mouth-watering delicious recipes in vibrant color. I'm ordering a hard copy for the recipes, but I will work on the exercises.

Decent
Nothing ground-breaking, but most of the information provided is accurate. There are some typos and mistakes, however.

The Wakeup Call I needed
Motivation is a big issue for me, and the author's approach to boosting willpower gave me what I needed to take it seriously. I prefer to know the science, and I got just enough here to drive the point home. The exercises portion was nothing groundbreaking, but helpful in the context presented. The pictures were helpful too. Where this book really kicks into gear is the portion on the Macro diet. Personally I had never heard of this, but it gave me a framework to think more critically about what I eat. The final section of the book was a bit close to home for guys who are firmly middle aged. The discussion on common health issues, and how that links back to choices around exercise and poor diet, along with drinking and smoking. This enough should be a catalyst for change. Oh, and did I mention the recipe book that was included as a "by the way"? Dozens of options here, so there's something for everyone. I'm planning to keep this one on my reference list and revisit until the habits are well formed. Recommended!

Easy to read, very informative!
I was a little skeptical when I decided to read this, as there are so many "how to" books out there for getting fitter and weight loss. However, this book was put together very well; concise explanations of the demands exercising and not exercising puts on your body, easy steps to follow with diagrams for strength training exercises, easy to follow directions on how often to exercise, when and what to eat, and last but not least, some great recipes to try out (there are quite a few so you won't get tired of the 'same old, same old'). Although I walk and/or ride a bike daily, I am going to put some of this author's suggestions to use: I especially like the ideas he has to use door frames for pull ups, counter tops, stairs or walls for push ups, house cleaning as opportunities for lifting and flexing, and so on. This book is a great motivator on how you can successfully strength train with items around your home without having to buy additional weights, machines or pay for a fitness package. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

It is to the point, provides some foundational habits and strategies to help you make lasting, long-term changes for your well being. This seems logical, doable, and fun. This is such a refreshing, straightforward, honest book! I would highly recommend it to anyone who is sick of fad diets and wants a straightforward honest approach to getting healthy.

Extremely worthwhile!
As a 54-year-old dude, these guides that focus on my age usually hold some kind of worthwhile advice and expertise. This one has a LOT, from much I'm aware of to very new info to me and some really great recipes. LOVED the "Ultimate Workout Plan" as mine seems to continually evolve, which is probably a good thing, so a new infusion of info keeps me motivated as well as keeps my body guessing. In all, I do think it covers the vital info behind what we can do to get/stay/remain healthy and feeling good, and LOADED with recipes targeted to my/our age group--GREAT RECIPES, in fact that's really the bulk of the book.
