My old peppermill just doesn’t grind like it used to. So I bought this one. It’s larger but the same style as my old set.

I paid about $9 for this, and it's exactly what we wanted: a functional, easy to fill pepper mill. First few twists were a bit harder than I expected, but by the 3rd or 4th turn it was smooth. The mechanics of this are exactly the same as the 30-year old grinder that we needed to replace. If you are looking for a hand-held grinder with a gear mechanism that feels like it magnifies your effort and turns easily, this isn't it. But if you want a classic, durable, very cheap model and you are willing to put a little elbow grease in, this is what you are looking for. You feel that you are grinding the spices.

I have been looking for a wooden pepper mill for a while now. The one I had previously was very tall and couldn't fit in my spice cabinet. This one is just the right size. It's very easy to use and since it comes with a brush it should be easy to clean.This does a fine grind and looks quite nice on our countertop. I was a bit disappointed that the grinder inside was actually made with plastic, hopefully that doesn’t mean it will get worse with time, but for now it works well. Also, the actually chamber for peppercorns is deceptively small given the overall size. Let’s see how often we have to reload. Definitely a giftable item!
