Heartwarming story
A wonderful look at the lives of the mountain people and their daily routines and challenges. Love historical fiction, and the characters in this book came to life. I felt I wanted to cheer them on as the story unfolded.

Like the author travelled to all states
My husband and I loved West Virginia, our final state to visit. The mountains, the people, and beauty of the land live in our memories. This book brought strong and good memories of those hills. It was a very good read!

Good Story
Fascinating information about living in Appalachian back woods. Liked learning about home remedy’s and folk lore through the story that kept pulling me forward to finish her mystery.

One of the best contemporary books I’ve read in a long time
I’ve read a few contemporary books lately — with good reviews — and have been disappointed with the quality of the writing and weak story lines. It seems there is an abundance of novels written about shallow city life. From the very first well-written paragraph, this story draws you into its world and characters. I come from Appalachia and reading the descriptions of the area and people was like coming home for me. I was disappointed that so far this is the author’s only novel. Can’t wait for more.

Inspiring
A glimpse into very authentic folks lives. Good and evil are presented as dark versus light. Be sure to read the epilogue and final notes.

Such a special read
This story captured my attention from beginning to end. Amanda was a character all readers could like. Discovering what happened to her reminded me about how unsavory people wreak havoc wherever they go,and in the end their past catches up with them. The ending was indeed a most stunning one filled with love, beauty, and happiness;just spectacular. I especially enjoyed all the phrases from the past that I remember hearing and using;my favorite being: "a month of Sundays".

Best book I ,'ve read this year.
This story was belieable. I hadn't heard about the library program during the depression. Educational and enjoyable. The end was a surprise but I would have done the same thing.

This Book Should Be A Movie
Light to the Hills is a lovely book brought to life by the descriptive writing and wonderfully developed characters! It played out like a movie as I read it.

Enjoyable reading
I enjoyed reading this book. It is difficult for me to imagine people living in these conditions in North America during my lifetime.

A story that just spills out. ‘The words tumbling like a rain-swollen creek down a mountain’.
This book is just ‘the best thing since pockets on a dress’. It was a joy to read. Wonderfully written in words that ‘travel like dandelion seeds. There’s no controlling where they’ll fly’.A story set in the 1930’s in the Appalachian Mountains, in a ‘nook of the world that was like the small end of a telescope’. The author writes in such a way as to perfectly capture the mood and language of the place and times. Great characters and plenty of plot, that unwinds in ‘the spool of telling’.This is a book that will catch you by the tail and ‘fill up your chest with air and a curious lightness’.Highly recommended.

A heart warming read!
Light to the Hills reminded me of books written long ago - perhaps a bit slow at the beginning, but descriptive and just enough suspense to keep you reading. Delightful characters along with nasty villains. No graphic violence, explicit sex, or coarse language.
