Can you backup the nas to a cloud server (eg amazon drive)?

Yes I believe this is an option. I backup to another nas and a usb drive, Backup to the other NAS tends to be slow and the backup to the usb is faster

How does it perform as a Personal Cloud solution accessing it from a remote location / smart phone when out and about?

With the smartphone app you can save and access all your files saved on the drive

What are the differences between the my cloud™ home duo and my cloud expert series ex2 ultra?

My understanding is that the software lacks some of the features that the EX2 has suck as JBOD, ISCSI support and a few others. The software has been simplified for a Home user rather than a NAS. The Home Duo should still be fine as a media server though and from what I'm told is a bit more secure.
