Fascinating and very informative
I am completely captivated by this book. It is so well written and crammed full of fascinating facts. The author has a huge amount of knowledge about trees and their surroundings, above and below the earth, and it is obvious he has a great passion for them. I have almost finished reading this book and have learned so much from it that walking through woods and forests in the future will never be the same. In fact I can't wait and will view trees in a completely different way now. If you love the outdoors, you will definitely enjoy reading this book.

Gets to the root of the matter
I almost gave up on this book after a couple of chapters because of the author's New Ageish portrayal of trees as kind of Tolkienesque Ent-like beings. I wasn't buying his interpretation of studies he used to bolster his claims. Indeed, I found that scientists in Germany (where the author is from) started a petition which says "we want to bring to the attention of the media that the attention the book โThe hidden life of treesโ by Peter Wohlleben has generated exceeds to the extreme its scientific factual basis. This book cannot be classified as popular science..." That said, Wohlleben is very good we he confines himself to the known natural history of trees - their different characteristics, strategies, relationships with forest animals, fungi etc. In fact, once Wohlleben moved on in the book from his more fanciful claims I found it most interesting and informative.

Interesting
Very interesting, informative, easy to read book. Nicely written, lots of details without unnecessary waffle. Second book of his I have read, he has a good style of writing, I look forward to reading more of his books.

The biggest longest living organism on the planet - who'd have thought? Check it out
A fascinating read demonstrating how little we know about the World around us. It seems we are at our Genesis and the next generation are faced with the immense opportunity of clearing up our act, understanding how the trees created the climate that is conducive to our wellbeing and how the wholesale destruction of these benevolent life forms will lead to our own downfall. Darwin postulated over 150 years ago that the trees combined with the activity of the earthworms created the environment we enjoy today. Lets hope this book will lead to more understanding of how our planet works and the atmosphere is created. According to the book we don't even really understand how these massive 'pumps' work but we do know that they massively affect the atmosphere and the air that we breathe and the water table. A first step in the right direction?

A great opener to those who love trees but may not know why!
This little book is packed with facts which are useful as well as imaginative. It is easy and a pleasure to read and I do feel I am aware so much more of the nature of tree growth and their "ways." Now I can look a various kinds of trees and understand why they survive or don't and also, fascinatingly, what goes on beneath the ground and under their skin (bark.) An original and insightful book.
