How can you see how much water is left? I can't see it through the window on the side.

You have to turn on the nightlighg for the machine & make sure your room is dark. But I use to just take the lid off & look in.

Why did my first use of this humidifier cause a pasty white film all over my machine and the floor?!

Wow, that shouldn't have happened. Did you add distilled/purified water only to the tank? Did you use the diffuser feature by adding essential/fragrance oil to the designated pop out tray located on the left side bottom of the unit? If you followed ALL of your set-up and user instructions prior to using the humidifier and ended up with a pasty mess , I'd definitely discontinue use and contact the seller asap. If possible, take a couple pics for proof, just in case. Hope this helps. Good luck!
