The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale (A Macabre Story About Courage and Friendship - Chapter Book for Early Readers Ages 4-9 in Grades 1-4)

This was a lovely story. Perfect for little ones who have a taste for ghost stories, but not too scary for sensitive ones. The theme about friendship is sweet but not didactic, and the art is lovely.

Well, this book is, admittedly, a little dark. Why would anyone write a long picture book about a little girl who runs away from home, befriends a body-less skull, and then defends her new friend from physical assault? Because it's freaking awesome; that's why. I have owned this book for several years now, and ALL of my kids have loved it. My five year old still requests it frequently. It isn't exactly scary; just spooky in a really fun way. And the sweet relationship between the girl and the skull (I know, I know) is heartwarming in an unexpected way. I'm a huge fan of all things Jon Klassen, and this is no exception. It might actually be my favorite of his books. It's great for pre-literature kiddos with a longer attention span (age 4 is probably the youngest that could sit still for it). It's also a nice bridge book for kids learning to read that are past easy readers but not yet ready for full chapter books.

I bought this as someone who’s building a portion of my home library to being a “fun aunt,” this was a perfect addition. This is a perfect for early readers, there’s a lot to engage with when reading and a silliness in the spookiness that is so cute and endearing. I bought it for the art alone, but the story matches perfectly.

I've never watched my 5 yr old son enjoy a story more than this one. He's always loved his books and bedtime stories, but The Skull felt different. This book is 4 parts & 100 pages. He was captivated by the story. He was asking questions. He would have me pause to tell me how much he was enjoying it. The illustrations are hauntingly gorgeous. The book itself is a perfect size. The story really is very sweet and a good lesson to be kind and brave enough to face your fears. It's the perfect amount of "spooky" but not quite "scary" for younger kids. All I'm saying is, if my 5 yr old son with ADHD can sit down and pay attention to the story the whole time, I think most other kids will find enjoyment out of this intriguing story as well.

The story is a bit dark. My child didn't like it and I didn't like it for my child. However, I liked it for myself. I'll put it in my collection until shes older. The skull was trying to stay away from the skeleton body. The little girl smashes and burns the skeleton. It was a bit violent and my child could not understand why the body was being destroyed.

If you've read and of his other books, this book will be a favorite. As others have said, it's dark and mysterious, and my 5 year old has been learning how to read by it since she loves the story so much. There isn't much detail, by design, in "why" something s happen in the book, but clues on why they might have happened. Just like his other books, I have discussions with my daughter during and after the book on what she thinks might have been the reason for this and that. For instance, there really isn't much detail on why Otilla ran away, or how the skull came to be just a skull, so it allows a lot of imagination to fill in the blanks. I was blown away with the pictures, and even my 15 year old enjoyed it as a well written short story. It's a chapter book, but something that might take about 20-30 min to read the whole thing. Definitely recommended if you have inquisitive kids why are fascinated by things that are a little dark.

This is one of the most charming books I’ve ever read. I love that every turn of the page finds another wonderful illustration. I could not recommend this more! I am not a “reviewer” of products normally, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell others about it. You won’t regret the purchase!

Read to my 3.5 year old daughter as soon as it arrived - three times in a row due to popular demand. At its core, it’s a story about friendship and courage. It’s kind of dark but in the sweetest way. The style of writing and illustrations are perfect. Enjoyable for kids and adults. Absolute winner for anyone with a tiny goth.

The illustrations are beautiful, and the story has a fun, slightly spooky charm that kept everyone intrigued. However, I didn't enjoy the number of unanswered questions in the story. It focuses on what happens to the characters but leaves their backstories unexplained, so children are left to guess how things came to be. While some might find that mysterious, I personaly prefer stories that connect all the dots.

Everything about this book is perfect. Art, story, look and feel. Perfect for adults and kids. Quite beautiful.
