You do need 3 AA bateries to buy to make the drill work - luckily I had them so we could enjoy this toy stright away. The plastic looks bright and made nicely. Everything is very simple and easy to play with. The only thing I would improve is the colour of the work surface - I would rather have it a little bit transparent as you cant quite see through those hole the pattern you are supposed to follow.
