Sauder Beginnings 5-Shelf Bookcase, Bookshelf with Adjustable Storage Shelves, in Cinnamon Cherry finish

Really happy with how they turned out. After reading reviews of them not being very sturdy, I added some extra nails to the center shelf while building it. I put peel and stick contact paper to the back of the shelves before nailing it to the shelves. My space is in our basement and the floor is slightly slanted away from the walls, to make it level I stuck some felt tabs (that you put on the chair legs to stop them from scraping the floor) and it worked really well.Very satisfied with the quality for the price.I was able to put them together by myself. The first few steps are just a pain in the butt. The directions say to assemble in carpet or to fold out the box if assembling on hard floor. I would recommend folding out the box on a flat hard surface, get a large piece of plywood if you only have carpet. I started assembling on carpet at first and it was near impossible to keep it level when putting the first screws in because it would on part would sink into the carpet and the other wouldn’t. I used the right angled cardboard pieces that came with it for shipping to help keep the middle shelf squared while starting off. For the second shelf I did use power tools, it was hard screwing in those dang screws and my arm was sore. I was extra careful because I was worried about splitting the wood.I would recommend but it’s not the easiest shelf to put together but not the hardest either. Just have a drink ready for after.

While assembling the bookcase, I stupidly tried to turn it on its side and broke the center shelf attachments. No problem: I went to their web site, entered the model number and part number (in the instructions), and they will send me a replacement shelf for just the cost of shipping and handling. I have two of these already which is why I chose to purchase them again. I find the assembly instructions to be easy and clear: they even have little lettered stickers on the different pieces of wood so that you can be sure you have the correct piece when you're putting it together. Also the unit is light enough that I can move it by myself. Yes, the bottom half only has two shelves where the top has three; I am wondering, though, whether I might not just be able to buy a couple more shelves from these guys (considering that it is so easy to get replacement parts if you just specify that you want them), and have three shelves on the bottom as well. I would then have to give them six stars!

These are decent shelves for the money. I wouldn't put them in my living room, but they are great for storage in a back room, which was the purpose for which I purchased these shelves. I needed a particular width and this bookcase fit the bill. However, I did not like that the height of this bookcase is divided in half, which means there is a weakness in the middle of the bookcase. This bookcase is quite functional, but not terribly pretty. The bookcase is tall - 71.25" - so it does need to be anchored against a wall and comes with an attachment to do that. Not for heavy items, either. It definitely suited my purpose, but the bookcase is average quality particle board. It was easy to put together and parts were labeled. I give it four stars because of the value for the price, but this is not a fancy or high-quality bookcase. It is merely average, but functional.

To say that I am saddened and disappointed with this bookcase is an exceedingly vast understatement. I chose this bookcase because of the brand, which has always stood for excellent materials and quality. Boy do these words seriously fall short with this bookcase, which is not even worth it for free. The backing is the cheapest backing I have ever seen. The first one split in three pieces whilst it was being put on. I called and asked for a replacement which arrived yesterday. After a rather long time prying all the nails out, I finally got the new backing on. But it was buckling and it looked terrible. That being said, I moved it to my room and the top part disconnected itself. The backing, which as I have said, is flimsy and barely thicker than normal paper ripped. I had serious reservations about its sturdiness as it was very wobbly. We decided to move it to a different spot and despite the cams being securely locked, the entire bookcase collapsed and broke into several pieces and with its fall, down I went too. I'm post-op from a tendon surgery and since the Achilles tendon area is now hurting I had to go to the doctor's office to get an assessment--that's not counting my scrapes and bruises.I have never given anything from Sauder a negative review and I have a lot of furniture from them, but this bookcase doesn't even come close to a 1 star review. In fact, if I could give it negative stars, I would. Seeing as this didn't even survive two moves and is now an expensive pile of particle board waiting for rubbish pick up, I have to wonder how long it would have held up or if an animal or child would have been seriously injured. I say child instead of person, because I was injured. I truly hope this is a one time thing and not indicative of declining standards in the quality that I have previously held with their name.What a shame.

In reading several reviews about this bookcase. I find some have jumped to conclusions on this product without thinking through the assembly procedure and application use. When I received this bookcase last week; I was too; a little unsure about the strength and stability. I found out that in order to have this bookcase fully stable with items on it; the back panels MUST be attached. Also while assembling the bookcase; I made doubly sure that the supplied screws were fully tightened. In addition to that; I used thicker and longer nails, along with some of the supplied nails to ensure the back was fully attached and secure. Nothing or no one says you can't make some modifications to make the product better. The nails I used were about 2" long in comparison to the 1" supplied nails, plus maybe about 2x thicker. I did try putting record albums on the bottom shelf but it did feel like it was starting to "bow" or curve slightly because of all the weight in the middle. Instead I stacked video tapes on the bottom three shelves and then used the upper shelves to hold some 9" and 7" records, reel to reel tapes and CDs with small holders. Even before putting the media on the shelves, I tested the stability and it did not move. Once the media was put on shelves; the entire bookcase didn't even budge and inch and still holding strong. For those that had trouble building this bookcase before; I would definitely give it another try but be sure to use it for applications that its intended. Do not put anything heavy without an equal weight distribution from end to end inside the bookcase; and also I recommend using longer and thicker nails to mount the back panels for a stronger hold. Just make sure the nails are driven in straight so that you don't nail through the panel causing damage to the finish on the inside. I gave it 5 stars because it truly is a great looking bookcase and have similar cabinets of this wood style that have held up for many years.

You get what you pay for, I suppose, but I could have gotten a better set of shelves probably at this price point. Thankfully I'm not placing a high demand on these shelves so they're fine for me but if you expect good-looking shelves for a collection or something keep looking. These are the cheapest possible build quality and the backing is cardboard. The finish is thin and mismatched between panels on my set. Every component is super easy to damage during assembly so use extra care in putting it together. Both my cardboard backing pieces ripped just unfolding them, for example, and had to be mended. Since they're structural, they had to be fixed. The complete assembly happens on the floor with the show faces down, so get a sheet or cardboard to keep it from getting scratched all to pieces as you assemble. I would not buy these again. They look pretty bad even for the price and I'm not really happy with them. A return would be impossible now since they're assembled.

Good shelving bookcase. I've have different shelving systems over my life and this one's good like the rest. I can more likely own this thing forever as long as I don't break it myself. It works for what I intended. The backer part (if used) is flimsy'ish material (like most or if not all shelving systems out there), so whatever you put on the shelves should not be pushed too terribly hard towards the back, or whatever you put on the shelves shouldn't rely much on the backer part to "stay propped up". I accidentally pushed something back kind of hard once and the backer sorta stayed "popped out" in shape and wasn't "laying flat" anymore because of the weight was pushing on it. The backer material is held in place with little nails that you basically hammer into the main wood on the edges. (I simply pushed the backer back in place and all is good now). Not sure if they sell a replacement backer part or not. Hopefully will never need one.

This was a good purchase for the price. It was easy to assemble and is sturdy. No complaints, very functional.

I found these bookcases at a whopping -50% off and wanted to buy 5 sets, alas amazon would only let me buy a maximum of 3. Why? I have no idea. They are easy to put together, but flimsy as heck. So, what I did was build them, stand them side by side against the wall and then added an extra screw near the top and near the bottom on each of the bookcases, basically fusing them together. Now they are sturdy and actually I'm chuffed with them. But if you just buy one, I think you'll be disappointed as it won't be sturdy enough to hold books. Also, be aware, I ended up getting three separate individual transaction charges for each of the bookcases, rather than 1 single total transaction charge on my credit card. No big deal, but if you have a free account with your bank and limited transactions, this seller, for some unearthly unimaginable reason, can't take one total amount. So you'll be dinged 2,3,4,5 etc times for each individual bookcase.
