Can this be used to grind spices? mostly star anise, cloves, pepper corns etc. has anyone tried? what levels of success have you had?

To be honest it is a little unwieldy to grind spices with any consistency however it makes a most excellent potato masher.

Are these made of solid walnut wood rather than a veneer?

The dumbbell handles have a hardwood sleeve which is nice to handle and nicely polished and smooth. The weights etc are chrome plated and their circular flat surfaces are covered in a thin vinyl layer that matches the handle.

Are there additional matching plates available for purchasing?

I have looked and been unable to find any. I have looked at the ProIron websites, and they seem to make it as a set only. From the design, the 3 plates overlap so that they do not scratch each other - they would have to make either a larger or smaller plate to avoid scratching, which they do not appear to do. Shame really. Would be delighted if someone can contradict me!

Can you put more than 10kg on to one dumbbell

The weights supplied for each dumbbell are 2x2.5kg, 2x1.25kg and 2x0.5kg so if you use all of the plates on one bar you have 17kg of discs plus the bar and collars which will still screw on securely two thirds of the thread, bringing the total weight to 19kg!
