Superb tool - and I am finding more uses for it than initially planned
This is a superb tool.A professional landscape gardener I know was using one of these (but an older one with a wooden shaft) to quickly dig holes suitable for planting shrubs - I watched him and realised how much more efficient one of these could be over a shovel.I have a few "Roughneck " brand items already, so I felt it was a brand that I could trust - and so far I have not been disappointed.Easy to put together and I do not see any sign of the head working loose. I like the feel of the tool with a fibreglass shaft rather than a wooden shaft - it feels as if less vibration is transmitted up the handle to the user. The black area of the shaft is textured and so far my hands have not slipped as I have used it.I have used it for removing some small trees and several buddleia that had self-established in my mothers neglected garden of the past 6 years. This tool is great for digging around a trunk and also for cutting through roots that are simply too deep or extensive to dig out (use the vertical mattock like an axe).I also used it to initially break up hard compacted ground before I could then make head-way with a garden fork. Finally I also used it to quickly create holes for planting shrubs.I find the combination of horizontal mattock-head and vertical mattock head (effectively an axe) to be a very useful and versatile tool, and the Roughneck brand to be well made and excellent value for money. Unless I lose it I do not expect to ever need to buy another (although I have just bought a second one - one to leave at my mother's house and one at my own house).Highly recommended.Just one last comment: the product description (product details) say "Supplied with a handy carry box. " . It only comes with the cardboard shipping carton. Although this is a sturdy box and I suppose if you removed the head after each use you could put the tool in the box again and carry it, I certainly would not describe it as "handy carry box". Also, I personally do not want to keep removing the head - I would rather leave it in place, and I give it a couple of taps to reseat it before I use it each time.Edit: 11 Oct 2016: I spoke to the Olympia Tools helpline (who manufacture the Roughneck brand), and they confirmed that the reference to a carry box is the carton box. It has a handy plastic handle on one side and the note refers to making it easier to carry from the supplier to your car or home (like a long narrow suitcase).

Well worth the money
This tool is very effective. I've used it to dig trenches, dig out a conifer stump and level an area for a shed base. It breaks up stony, clay soil easily and I'll be using it to remove many more stumps in my garden. The blade chipped on first use, but this didn't make a difference to its effectiveness, and it'll sharpen out in time. I've hit many rocks since and the edge has held up fine. I usually try to buy wooden handled tools, but found the fibreglass handle to be robust and I'm not worried about it splitting or chipping. Highly recommended, much, much better than a spade alone.

Nice chopper
I've used this a lot since buying it and it has stood up well over the months we've been landscaping our garden. Perfect for digging out tree stumps, tough roots and breaking up impacted earth to make digging easier You might need to practice your swing/ aim if you aren't practiced in using it. Weight is manageable and the shaft seems strong enough to take some abuse. I found that sharpening the blades helps a lot in cutting more quickly through roots, and the tool has been managing to chop through roots of about 2 inch diameter with one blow. A very useful tool for this specific task and the mattock should last a lifetime. A tad cheaper and it would have gotten 5 stars

Best Buy of kit for a big old garden
This is a perfect tool for digging out old smaller tree stumps and old bushes you need to get rid of. It’s wide horizontal edge can be used gently to scoop away loose material before swinging it like a demented Viking on a rampage. The shorter end with the vertical cutting fave makes very short work of roots Ito about an inch thick with a couple of well placed blows. Beware though; it’s a big unit and you really need to make sure there’s no one anywhere close to you as you swing it…it is SHARP! Plus, steel toe capped boots are must. Well worth the money and glad I bought it

Worked very well
Digging up old established bamboo rhizomes and roots. Even though it’s taken a great deal of hard work, This is the only tool which has made any impression. Used a hand Bosch grinder to keep the edges sharp. Picks and shovels made no impact…I bought this one featured here and a smaller hand version.both worked very well.

Just what I needed
Trying to remove tree stumps and large stones/rocks from my garden with a pick axe and spade was a long tiring job before I got this mattock. What a difference the right tool makes……. What was taking up my weekends for the past few weeks was now finished in 2 days.Very strong and durable easy to use and very comfortable to use with the anti slip handle grip.I’d highly recommend one of these if you’ve got lots of heavy work to do and tree stump removal, far more useful than a standard pick axe

does what its designed for but heavier than anticipated
easy enough to put the head on when it was delivered ( i was a bit concerned it might come off again when dad used it but its fine). it is heavier than dad expected so hard work to use but easier and quicker than alternatives. he has been using it to "plow" rows for him to plant his potatoes. i thought it was heavy and not sure i would have been able to use it but dad said whilst it made him sweat so does digging rows with a spade and this was quicker.
