Hand Crafted Wooden SENATOR Chess PROFESSIONAL Set 40 x 40 cm

Really nice set, pretty much exactly as expected/wanted. The board is a good size, big enough to catch the eye in a room and in terms of aesthetics, certainly pleasing to the eye as well. A few people have reported nicks or scratches, can't say there's any on mine although with the handmade feel of the board, little marks would blend in quite naturally.The pieces are fine with just a couple of imperfections. One of the knights' eyes is noticeably out of line and one of the little balls on the Queen's crown is crooked. At the risk of sounding contrived, these don't bother me because they just go with the feel of the set. It's not supposed to be pristine and imperfections just reinforce the handmade feel of it.The pieces are lighter than expected but weighty enough for comfortable play. They stay in place surprisingly well when inside the box too. I was expecting them to have fallen about when turning the board around but they are held in place well by the lining inside the board. The lining is nice to look at if a bit plasticky to touch but like I said, it does the job well.For the price you pay, it's a very nice set.

Very pleased with the chessboard set just what I was looking for. Its the right size to sit on top of the nest of tables in my living room. I will leave it set up on display looks good as a feature in the room better than a plant (don't have to water). Well made and good detail work on the whole of the set. Value for money would recommend.

Poor quality item. Flimsy wood, very light. Very very disappointed. This was a late birthday gift so I had no choice but to keep it. Look around more than I did.

Bought this as a gift for Christmas which seemed to go down really well. The quality is excellent and each piece is well made with care. There is a faint smell which I see others have mentioned but nothing overwhelming. The 40cm x 40cm set is a perfect size for playing and I wouldn't want anything smaller.In terms of storage, the chess board folds in half and the bottom side has spaces for each individual piece in a felt box meaning it is easy to store everything without too much risk of losing any pieces!Packaging on arrival was also as described in a white box - the only downside to the purchase was that one of the squares had quite a large scratch in it which although we can live with, it is a shame.

A lovely chess set. I'm really glad to have it. It doesn't get five star because I know there are more luxury products out there. But what you get for the price is really special. Lovely pieces, big board, came undamaged. Thanks!

It really is the most exquisite chess set. The board and the pieces are beautifully carved. I actually bought it for my granddaughter's 4th birthday so she will have many many years of enjoyment with it. The only complaint I have is that the delivery man left it in the garden (small garden on a main road) as there was no-one at home. Fortunately it was still there when we arrived home or she would have been disappointed. I had paid for express delivery so expected better service than that. But apart from that, the chess set itself is beautiful and one of the best I have ever seen.

"SENATOR Chess PROFESSIONAL Set", made by Wegiel (a Polish company that has made such sets for over 40 years), arrived on the 4th day after ordering, well packaged, & as pictured & described. However, one of the dark-stained number squares had a 7x1mm chip along its lower edge. The white wood exposed makes this an obvious defect.The surface with squares appears to be made of a single piece of beech wood, stained to produce dark squares: the rope pattern that separates squares appears to have been burnt in to the wood, giving the surface a little texture between squares (no doubt this makes staining alternate squares a little easier). It would have been nice if naturally dark wood had been used to make the dark squares and dark pieces, such as heartwood of Oak, Laburnum, Box, or Robinia, or perhaps even that of Yew, Cherry, Hawthorn, Damson or Plum (the latter species give a bright, deep, pinkish-red colour). I think these sets are made to order, as mine had a *VERY strong* smell of varnish (if you have breathing problems, such as asthma, this is likely to be a problem, until such time as the smell fades). I have read one review that claims that even three months after receiving a set it still had a faint varnish odour.The pieces are well made and well finished, as pictured. They have felt bottoms, which is nice. The pieces are not to heavy, and not too light, their form is perfect for moving about the board: not too petite; not too bulky, just perfect! They are bottom weighted, to help prevent them from accidentally being knocked across the board, should someone accidentally knock the board during a game.Even with the aforementioned defect, for the price (£21.99) this is a nice set, especially when you consider the work required to produce a set like this, and I'm sure the varnish smell will fade with time (all varnish applications give a strong smell at first).I bought this as a gift for a six year old. For that purpose, it is almost perfect. I say almost because, when folded away, the board is quite large (40.5 x 20.5 x 5cm) and does not come with a carrying case. Folded, the board is about the size of a six year old body.A carrying case with adjustable carry strap would have been nice, not only for carrying, but to protect the board surface from damage such as that previously mentioned. These were not included.I would recommend this set for family travel holidays, to keep in the car/caravan, and for day to day use. In its price range, this is a good quality item, but not the sort of thing I would give to an adult as a classy table top set. I think that I would perhaps get a smaller size board if ordering again for a young child.The housing for the pieces appears to be made of a sufficiently sturdy plastic, covered with some kind of felt-like material. It holds the pieces well, but without making them difficult to get at. Just right.I am a little disappointed that my set came with a damaged square, but the set is what I was after. As the board was well packaged in a custom made card box (plain, like a shoe box - nothing special), placed in a corrugated cardboard box, with packaging paper, I feel the damage must have been present prior to packaging, which means the seller should have noticed it prior to packaging and at least made it less noticeable.One final criticism: game rules/instructions were NOT included.Buyers should note that when ordering from "a third party seller" - a seller, as Amazon puts it, whose products are `Fulfilled by Amazon', sent directly to the buyer from an Amazon.co.uk Fulfilment Centre -, it is not possible to exchange a defective product, or part of that product, for one free from damage/defects. If you request such an exchange, Amazon automatically, without consultation, issue a full refund and request you return the product to them, then place a new order.I went through the process, but my replacement set had a defective king - his crown was crooked. On the up-side, the replacement did not have such a strong varnish odour; on the down-side, the plain corrugated cardboard storage box was damaged. Amazon refused to exchange the king for the one I had previously returned and the whole scenario began again. In their responses to my enquiries, Amazon avoided providing answers to my questions and eventually refused to communicate. They did send a second replacement set, but it too had a defective dark king: a part of his white crown had chipped away.It would appear that between the makers and the buyer, nobody is checking product quality.My advice to anyone placing a re-order would be not to return the product until you are in receipt of the replacement and checked it is free from damage/defects.

A well made and nicely detailed chess set.Each piece has a simple yet elegant design for strategy. The size of the board is perfect for playing without taking up too much space and can be folded neatly away. The padding underneath the board has multiple placements for all the chess pieces to be allocated and stored in an organised manner.This is the best chess set I have ever owned.A speedy and prompt delivery service.
