Didn't plane flat - no approved way of adjusting the blades to get them flat with the base.
Bought this a while ago, but hadn't used it - luckily I'm still within the Amazon returns window to send it back, so back it goes...Anyway, I bought this to roughly plane down a joist, but tried it out first on some bits of softwood to see how it did. In a nut-shell: the blades (or the drum, it's hard to see) were not aligned with the base - they were about 0.5mm out from one side to the other; all cuts on scrap wood were way off flat, even when being really careful. Thinking the blades had become dislodged in transit, I loosened and re-seated them (twice), following the instructions in the handbook. However, it made on difference. There are two grub screws on the blade holder that look like they're for adjusting the heights, but the advice in the handbook was not to touch them (so I didn't, as I didn't want to void my return).I guess I might have been unlucky - maybe I got a poorly setup one - but this review reflects the one I purchased.

Simply Awful
We moved into our new build house and ordered carpets, the doors had already been trimmed down so nothing needed doing when the laminate floor went down.....until the carpets came along and we found that everydoor that opened into a room with carpet needed nearly 1cm removing, read the spec and thought that this electric planer would be the best option, especially as I would unlikely to use it again for a long time. I wished I hadn’t bothered, did the first door, took a huge chunk off and it still rubbed, tried again and again and eventually it just cleared the carpet, came to the second door (of eight) and again it took so many passes, I then noticed the door wasn’t quite flat and wondered if I’d done something wrong - no, the adjustment plate on the bottom was only adjusting on 1 side so wasn’t level. At this point I gave up with the planer and out came the trusty jigsaw which sorted the other 6 doors in the same time as it took to do the first 2!

Shame on you Silverline.....
With so many previous reviews stating this planer blades come blunt, you would assume silverline would have looked at quality control. However they didnt and as soon as i tried to use the planer it singed and burned the wood whilst taking little to nothing off the door i was trimming. I shouldve returned but missed the 30 day policy and tempted to quote goods and services act where product has inherent faults at manufacture.I tried getting blades and see if they could be sharpened but no joy so if anyone knows if blades can be purchased would appreciate otherwise this will become a door stop. Shame on you silverline, if you wish to correspond i look forward ....

Useful for quick and rough work, but not for accuracy
Okay for rough work - say quickly trimming a bit off the bottom of a door - but not much use for anything requiring accuracy. The sole plates are not perfectly flat or aligned, and the mechanism for holding and aligning the blades in the drum is pretty rough and fiddly to adjust. Given the price you can't really fault it, though - a high quality planer would cost well North of £120. Even with it's faults, it's unbelievable how they can churn these out at £30 and still make profit. Just don't buy it expecting to do high quality joinery.

this is way underpriced!
first, I bought a no 4 smoothing hand plane, after some serious planing and a ton of workout, I figured I should let a powertool do the rough job, and then I'll just smooth it.read reviews, read complains, figured I should give it a go, was pleased to test it out and see that everything works great, the blades it comes with are working properly, the depth adjustment needs some "wear" I think, the trigger is a bit hard to keep pressed, but that's a good thing, you don't want to accidentally plane yourself or someone around you.tip: if you go with more than 1mm depth in one pass, don't expect the end surface to be very smooth, you're basically tearing the wood, follow up with a very thin shave to make it shinythe bag with which it comes is TINY, but on the flip side, you can replace it easily and reuse the adaptor with a larger bag, I'd recommend using it in open air or connecting it to a vacuum/dust collector

DIY not?
Does the job, for an occasional DIY'er.Probably not so good for a tradesman, or if you are intending heavy use; but I used it to trim up a couple of doors, and it worked a charm

A good tool for planing
Great tool, easy to use and does the job. The bag is the only thing that lets it down *4 not 5 stars, as it fills up in seconds and sawdust just gets blown out everywhere so use somewhere easy to clean up!

I chose this planer based on the god customer reviews ...
I chose this planer based on the god customer reviews and purchased it to ease a couple of doors. I was unable to turn the blade height adjuster which appeared to be locked solid so I requested a replacement. Unfortunately the second planer, which arrived within a couple of days, has exactly the same fault and so I have returned that one too, this time for a refund. I shall purchase a planer from a different manufacturer.
