My Spelling Book 1: High Frequency Words (sight words) (I Can Spell)

Ordered this book along with book 2 in order to help 5 year old with spelling (a keen writer).Firstly, the book is a lot smaller than expected. It reminds me of the exercise books that I used in school, same size and appearance (except this has book title etc printed on).The pages are a cream colour, which isn't a big issue, but I would prefer white (probably because we are so used to using white paper).The book begins with simple words such as up and on, and steadily builds up so that the last page contains words such as would and should. The final two pages with the spelling layout are blank so that you can choose words you feel need to be practiced more.The last section in the book is designed to be filled in after spelling test for each section.The general layout is very good, child sees word and can trace over it (if your child doesn't mind that unlike mine!) then they write the word (with the printed word uncovered) move onto cover and write and eventually cover their eyes to spell the word.At the end it has a little achievement certificate which is brilliant, because after all the hard work children deserve to be told they have done well.

I bought this book for my 5 years old twins on 1st of June 2017, my boys never had proper spelling training. I let them practice 1 or 2 pages daily (except weekends), then dictated those words 1 or 2 times until they can spell the words correctly, normally they could do this within 30 minutes. Now 28 days past, they can spell all the words in this book 1 correctly. I am so happy and going to buy the book 2 today. 😀 I think any kid can master those words spelling within 1 month as long as they persistently practice it. A very useful book!!!

This is not a glamorous book with a fun theme, it is not colourful or illustrated, and there are no jokes. But it really, really works. My 9 year old has a much younger reading and spelling age and really struggles with spelling - but this is systemic and easy to use for the child and parent/home educator. The repetition of needing to spell a word correctly three times in a row before it is "signed off" is really good, and my son enjoys using the book - laughing out loud as he does the "close your eyes and spell" part.

I bought this book and the book 2 at the same time for a dyslexic student I was working with on a 1-1 basis. I think this book is great, easy and simple format that the children like. The words in this book are really the first sight words and therefore was too easy for the student I was working with, words such as: and, am etc. However, ideal for a student that is younger or has very weak spelling.I would recommend for using on a 1-1 basis.
