Jack Irwin Key Hole Saw
I needed a slim saw that I could use to cut out the hole for a cat flap, and something that could not only saw around corners but that would fit into a small hole to begin sawing. This saw was better than a hacksaw, as it did not need a frame that made a hacksaw unsuitable for this job. I could not use a jigsaw blade either, as I find a jigsaw cutter hard to control. It is a good strong saw for such a slim blade, and did a great job. I was very pleased.

A SHARK IN THE HAND
I am a kite maker. I used to make patterns for cutting out my fabric from thin card but found they only lasted for one kite and then got damp and unreliable so I decided to try cutting them from 3mm 8x4 sheets of MDF. This presented problems when I tried a jigsaw and found the sheet vibrated so much I could not follow the cutting line, particularly round curves.A Tyzack dovetail saw proved ideal for cutting straight lines but for curves I needed a narrower blade. In the end I bought several modern Compass saws - all approxmately the same length and all with the same 7-8TPI but with different blade depths. In the event I am glad I did not just buy one.On trying them out I found they were strikingly different due to different tooth shape. The first and cheapest one -marketed by Silverline- had a blade completely powder coated in lurid orange epoxy and double angled Japanese style SHARK teeth but these would hardly make an impression on MDF. It was however very good for cutting green tree branches without clogging and so I will reserve it for that. That coated blade will not easily rust.I next tried the IRWIN Jack Xp3047-300. It went through MDF faster than my Bosch Jigaw but it was so aggressive I found it tended to wander from side to side. For many of the cuts I started with my arm fully extended across the MDF sheet which is easy with this saw due to its long open grip. The tendency to wander did not matter as I was cutting pieces 1/2" outside the line so I could fine trim them later. To fine trim I used an older style compass saw with a hard plastic grip-the Jack Prestige-and was amazed at how much more controllable it was. On examination I found the blade was slightly thicker and stiffer and the teeth had slightly less set. The short thumbhole grip was not as comfortable to hold but it gave more control on curves. I found it was easy to cut to 1/32" from the line and refine the circular curves with one or two sweeps of a block plane or inshave.I have not tried the Jack saws on timber yet - I would guess the Xp3047 would be good for thicker boards because of the aggressive set of the teeth. These two different tooth styles make a good combination, one is like a Rip Saw the other a fine Crosscut. It is amazing what a difference the set and angle of the teeth makes.I also bought several very old compass saws on Ebay but cannot compare them since they are all blunt and need sharpening which I am only just thinking about at the moment in the light of my interesting experience with these modern induction hardened blades. As a shopping Experience I have no complaints - except there is a tendency for firms now to put small items in standard size large boxes full of airbag packing and send one a box of air that the Postal service charge to transport.

Robust keyhole saw.
I Used it to cut through a double glazed rear door to install a dog flap. You need to drill a hole at each corner to insert the tip of the saw. Robust construction and use able by mostD I Y... ers. Sturdy.

Good addition to the domestic/craft toolbox
I needed to cut a hole in the roof of a wooden dollshouse to add a dormer window. This was exactly what I needed and it did a very good job. It was sharp, easy for this arthritic OAP to hold, and left a neatly cut hole in the fibreboard.

Good
Several years on now, and I still have it and it has been very useful, still sharp. Worth it.

Just purchased this saw and have used it once ; the product is made by a reputable company associated with quality material and the product reflects this, as the adage goes, buy the best you can afford and that message is seldom out of place. This product should give years of service.

Cat Flap installation in UPVC door
I bought this because I was looking for a keyhole saw to install a cat flap in a UPVC door. I wouldn't recommend it for installing it in a upvc door as the teeth aren't made for that material. I did succeed though but only just hacked a hole in the door with this and had to finish off with a junior hacksaw and a file. The tool is good and I wood definitely recommend it if you need to use it on wood.
