The packaging of these transistors is for retail stores. The shipping packaging was superior, more than it needed. I would think they would be less expensive if the seller rethinks the packaging. The packaging does, however, describe what the three legs are.If you need a few, this is a good buy ---priced nearly the same as Radio Shack. If you want greater quantities, you'll find them on Amazon from another seller.They work well and it took a lot to "fry" them from misuse. (I'm just learning about electronics) They also hold up to my developing soldering skills.

I bought theses to build a "Joule Thief" night light to make use of "dead" AA batteries from my gaming controllers. I've since built and sold a few to some friends.I built a base similar to this...[...]but used a hollowed out diffused light bulb with three UV LEDs.

Works just as described and haven't ran into any faulty transistors.
