So far so good
So far Im on the second month of using one of these filters in my Breville Barista Express. It is working great, no difference in flavor or operation. Fit perfectly into the machine with no problems.I purchased my espresso machine 5 months ago. 3 months in it was time to replace the water filter. I noticed my espresso was not coming out the way it normally did. I cleaned the machine using the cleaning pods but still needed to swap the filter. Breville was sold out of their filters (both on their site and on resellers). So I looked for alternatives. Glad I bought these as they are so far working great and are a fraction of the cost.

Fit just right in my Breville Barista Express
I ordered these to put in my new Breville BES870XL Barista Express to replace the one that came with the machine. Breville recommends replacing the filter every 60 days. They appear to be nearly identical to the original filler pod. Same dimensions, filter medium looks similar, only finer granules and not packed quite so full. I didn’t test the water before and after filtration so I can’t say for certain if they work as well as the brand name filters, but they seem to work just fine. Looking at other reviews and questions there is understandably some confusion as to what type of medium these filters contain. The product description says Ion Exchange Resin, but the packaging says charcoal filters. That’s actually their logo and company name - “K&J Charcoal Filters” - the actual filters are not charcoal filters but in fact Ion Exchange Resin. Depending on your needs you will want one or the other. Ion Exchange Resin (or “IX”) uses small, glass-like organic polymer beads impregnated with sodium ions (salt) that cause a chemical reaction to replace the magnesium and calcium ions found in hard water with sodium ions. Activated carbon (or “charcoal”) filters work via a process called adsorption, whereby pollutant molecules in the water are trapped inside the pore structure of the carbon. If your water has a strong taste or smell or is heavily chlorinated you want charcoal filters to improve the taste. If your water is especially hard, meaning high levels of dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium then you want IX resin to prevent limescale from clogging your expensive machine. If you are using filtered water, whether from a Brita pitcher or faucet filter, inline water filter, or RO system, you don’t have a problem with putrid smells or chlorine taste, so you should probably use the IX resin filters like these so you don’t have to descale your machine so often. If your water tastes bad or you have soft water, use charcoal filters.

Does the job
We have very hard water where I live so reducing hardness is important to reduce scaling and improve the lifespan of appliances. These seem to be nearly identical to the Breville water filters at one third the price. They seemed a bit less full and the construction is slightly different but the filters completely fill the filter holder and the media is indeed Ion Exchange Resin (or so it appears) and not charcoal. I may have to do a water hardness test of the water coming out of the Breville to determine the effectiveness of these filters but no problems so far. Considering you can purchase the resin in bulk for about $2.00/lb and six filters contain no more than a few ounces of the stuff, the price seems about right.

Filter Works Great !!
Breville website did not have any filters available which led me Amazon. Shipment was quick, and find the filters are very compatible. These filters work just as good as OEM and not to mention, economically priced. The price you pay allows the filters to be changed out more frequently if necessary to make your unit perform and taste better.
