Good but not as good at the others.
Good but not as good at the others.I really like Michael Benson astronomy books but this one pales in comparison. His earlier book, Beyond: Visions Of The Interplanetary Probes, and Planetfall: New Solar System Visions, are masterpieces. Granted they are twice the price but they are more than twice the magnificence. I knew this might be the case but when I read there were new images, including those of Pluto, I took the plunge. Now, I won't say it's a waste. In fact, the book is still great. I give it 4 stars. But if you haven't picked up either of his others then do so first. This book seems to be a retread. Many of the images are in his other books. Yes, there are some new images but about a third are reprinted images. Also, the size of the other books are immense and this book is much smaller. The paper quality is not as high as the others either. Additionally, there is only ONE image of Pluto and none of Neptune. With all the new images of Pluto and Charon that were so interesting and high rez, it's a shame to see that this was a missed opportunity. In addition to the excellent image processing of the wonderful worlds that inhabit our solar system is the captivating prose Benson provides and this book does deliver on that front. Not only does he have a way with words but the things he choses to describe also reveals a passion and expertise that few others can follow. In the end, I was disappointed that the book included too many previously printed images. I understand that this was because the book accompanies an art gallery show that displayed many of his images. So, there's a reason that some of the best images would show up again. It's just that I wished I had perused it in a book store first prior to deciding to spend money on it.
