Easy to use, big savings by DIY!
First time buying and using a drain snake auger. I went with this one because of the mixture of price and features. This auger features a steel drum. While there could be potential rust issues with the steel I felt that the sturdier construction would be handy over plastic. The first thing I did was to remove the wingnut and it's mount and flip the pistol grip around so the finger groove is on the front. My favorite feature is the knob on the back has a nice flare to it to help grip it. That part in other snakes especially the plastic drum ones is just a little nub of a cylinder. The rounded flare on this one is key to holding it and operating. I found myself holding it with one hand by the knob and the other hand feeding the line. If it was just a little nub that would have been impossible. But with this knob it was secure even with wet gloves.Since it was my first time using a snake after watching a bunch of videos I decided to do it by hand and not use the drill attachment. If you are not careful when using it by hand you can run your finger into the drill attachment shaft. But it's easy to avoid so that isn't an issue once you learn to avoid it.This snakes head area is much longer and increases and decreases multiple times over the ones that are shorter and more of an open face coil design. I believe that this longer tighter head allows this snake to not get hung up as much and also get around corners better. In the videos I watched a lot of the other head designs would have trouble getting into even the first downward curve of the tub overflow. With this long head I was able to just bend it right in by hand.Make sure to use gloves and have plenty of paper towels and Clorox wipes on hand and a trash bag for the removed clog. When feeding in or out I kept a Clorox wipe in my feeding hand and cleaned it any time I backed it into the drum. With a little work and patience I was able to remove an unbelievable big, long clump of hair. Ran it twice more after removing the hair clog and cleaning off the coil. Both of the next 2 attempts came up clean. So the snake did an excellent job spiraling through and collecting it all. Again another great feature of the longer coil head this has. If you are having trouble removing the hair try bending the coils a little to remove the pressure in them but be careful as to not flick anything off.Plummers want like $400 in my area to run a snake or do a blowout! That's crazy! Take your time and learn how to do it right and anyone can do this by themselves and save time and money! It's already paid for itself with that one job and now it will hopefully last a lifetime!

The Budget 50 FT Auger
For roughly the same price you're getting a 25 FT one at HD. So this is the Budget version of the 50 FT one. This one doesn't have a metal handle or removable plate to set the drill like most videos have.Matter of fact the Drill part doesn't even work for me with a Ryobi One drill/driver. The joint seems to just be a circular rod on a spring with a slight one angle for rotation?Regardless the drill part didn't work at all which is what I docked the star for on Value. So outside of it being 50 ft - because you need pro stuff to go 75-100.It is relatively simple to use.Sadly mine came with 2 "kinks" at maybe 40-45 ft in. It does slow down the auger a bit if your clog was that far down the line like mine was but slowly inching in somehow made it through. It's a bit of a pain to use because of the cheap plastic feel but not enough to dock it down. The drawstring pouch it came in was damaged surprise surprise because of the auger tip.2 gloves it came with were fairly ok somewhat good grip.Anyways, not sure if my clog is 100% clear but it's working for now after maybe a week worth of logistics.Between my 100 ft jet setter, this 50 ft auger, and regime of green gobbler it should be fine for now.The auger cleared out most of the debris but you'd need to go at it several times because it'll get caked into the head compared to jetting into the pipes which blasts it clean away.Overall at a low enough price point it's worth getting if you're not ready to go for a pro level tool.

Not the best
I wasn't personally impressed with this snake. We had a bad clog in one of our drains and I ran this thing down inch by inch, rotating it along the way like you're supposed to, and for some reason it wouldn't clear the clog, in fact it just seemed to shift something in the pipes along the way and made the clog worse. I tried over and over again to clear it and ended up going the entire available length several times and it just didn't work. The clog was fairly close to the drain judging by how much water it took before it backed up so it was annoying not to be able to clear the clog (which was very probably hair) with this thing. I ended up using half a bottle of drano which cleared it no problem and we haven't had a problem with that drain since. I feel like the spring on the end of this thing is too narrow to do a good job of cleaning hair. Also, when I pulled it back up the first time there was a small amount of hair stuck to it and it was a huge pain to clean it off as it got all tangled in the grooves. I probably won't be using this much in the future unless I absolutely have to.
