The legend of the invincible fleet begins! Set five years before the epic battle depicted in The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Hansan: Rising Dragon is based on the true historical naval engagement, Battle of Hansan Island. In July 1592, admiral Yi Sun-sin and his Korean naval fleet face off against invading Japanese naval warships. Falling into crisis, the admiral must use his secret weapon to change the tides in this epic battle at sea. "a captivating blend of epic battle sequences, military strategy, and human decision" --The Silver Screen Analysis "rousing naval action" --In Review Online "these monstrous ships are worth the wait, roaring through the water in impressive sequences" --The New York Times Review: I was staggered at this historical account. - This is a story about a sea battle between Japan and Korea around 1595. I was amazed at the battleships used in this war. On some of them, there were 4 decks with cannon ports every 20 feet. They were also designed for ramming other ships and repelling boarders. Some of them were ironclads. Review: Another Amazing bit of Korean history - Don't bother waiting to watch this one before getting The Adimiral, they are both great and go together very well, and Han San chronologically comes first. Both have fantastic acting and incredibly high production values.

I bought this movie because I saw The Admiral, and I wasn't disappointed.

Some corny characters and subplots
As a film, Hansan: Rising Dragon feels disappointingly corny at times. That is a pity because I genuinely enjoyed both The Admiral: Roaring Currents and Noryang: Deadly Sea. The central problem with Hansan is the sheer number of poorly written subplots and scenes. The Japanese turncoat who defects because he believes the war is a โbattle of the righteous against the unrighteousโ feels implausibly sentimental. The Korean female spy seems unnecessary, while Admiral Won is portrayed as such a reflexively incompetent commander that he borders on caricature. Yi himself and the Battle of Hansan Island are portrayed competently enough, but the weakness of the surrounding cast and subplots is real.
