Easy to install. But I didn't notice any improvement in the system.

I had some trouble with my outdoor unit not starting. It turned out to be a bad contactor, which I replaced. To keep my aging system running a bit longer, I also installed a new fan motor and a Supco hard start capacitor. Since you're dealing with electrical and high voltage, I'd recommend turning off the breaker to the outdoor unit and also pulling the disconnect in the outdoor box mounted on the house next to the outdoor unit. This will kill the high voltage, but since the system may still receive 24V from the thermostat and the indoor unit, I'd recommend also turning off the thermostat and/or the power switch to the indoor unit, so nothing tries to start while you are installing the Supco hard start capacitor.There are 2 connectors on the Supco hard start capacitor. One lead attaches to the C and the other to the Herm terminals of the primary capacity. The orientation of the leads doesn't matter. A zip tie and screws are included with the hard start capacitor, which give some options for securing the hard start capacitor inside the panel area. The leads are long and the hard start capacitor has almost no weight to it, so it could hang freely if you didn't have anything to wire tie or fasten it onto. I drilled a hole in the metal and mounted mine with a screw just below the primary capacitor, to keep things inside the panel neat and organized. With the new fan motor and contactor installed, its difficult to tell if the compressor and fan are turning on quicker and with less effort because of the addition of this Supco hard start capacitor, but prior to installation, I did some research on the Internet and they are recommended to extent the life of new systems as well as older ones, as an easier start places less wear on the other components. I'm not sure how long the hard start capacitor will function before it needs replacement, but it was inexpensive and very easy to install, and I'm satisfied with it.

Are you tired of listening to a major thump and the lights dimming when your ac starts up? Get this. It is an awesome fix that actually helps gain life on your compressor. I’m telling you, I could hardly hear my AC units come on after install and both outdoor units sit right behind my living room wall where my tv sits on a stand. So my ears are pointed at that wall often to watch tv. I’d hear the 8 year old units get louder and louder over the years. I thought this could get expensive if I let this go. Talked to a guy that does ac work and he says he’s been installing these for years on new units and old, even stuck compressors will break free using one of these!!! Of course the breaking free of the stuck compressor will only buy you some time before you have to replace it.I also replaced the capacitors when I did this supco upgrade and kept the old caps for a bad rainy day. Keep in mind, I’ve replaced the caps before and the thumping compressor and dimming lights happened after. That no longer happens.
