Great price and works straight from the box. Simple and a great way to reuse your old laptob drives.
Such a useful item. It was very easy to set up and works perfectly. I liked the item so much I immediately purchased a second one. I have removed the hard drives from my old laptops and installed into this enclosure. My old laptops may be dead but the drives can now live on.

ENCLOSURE REVIEW VERIFED REVIEW
The ORICO 2.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure is one of those tech products that looks boring until you actually need one — then it becomes insanely useful. Raw truth: for the money, these ORICO enclosures are usually very solid budget devices, but they are absolutely not premium-grade professional storage hardware. They’re mainly popular because they’re: cheap, simple, fast enough, tiny, and ridiculously easy to use. What this thing actually does It lets you turn: an old laptop HDD, or a SATA SSD, into a portable external USB drive. So instead of throwing away: old SSDs, laptop hard drives, PS4 drives, upgrade leftovers, you can reuse them as: portable storage, game storage, backups, movie drives, Steam libraries, emulation storage, recovery drives. Honestly: this is one of the best “cheap tech utility” products around. The BEST thing about it: simplicity This is why people buy ORICO. Most versions are: tool-free, screwless, slide-open designs. You literally: slide the case open, plug the drive into SATA connector, close the shell, plug USB into your PC. Done. No drivers usually needed. No setup nightmare. No complicated nonsense. That simplicity is the main selling point. Size and portability These things are genuinely tiny. Most are: barely bigger than the drive itself, pocket-sized, lightweight, easy to throw in bags. The plastic models especially feel featherweight. Raw truth: they’re small enough that many people forget they’re even carrying them. Perfect for: students, portable ROM collections, media libraries, backup drives, carrying Steam games. Speed — real-world truth Marketing says: 5Gbps USB 3.0 SATA III UASP support And honestly: for normal users, performance is good enough. With SSDs: bootable systems feel snappy, file transfers are fast, gaming works well, emulation runs perfectly fine. Typical SSD performance can hit roughly: ~400+ MB/s reads ~400+ MB/s writes That’s solid for a cheap enclosure. Important reality check You are NOT getting: NVMe enclosure speeds, Thunderbolt performance, premium workstation hardware. This is SATA USB storage. Not magic. Build quality — raw truth This depends massively on the model. Plastic versions Most common. They feel: lightweight, decent, slightly cheap, but acceptable. Not luxury. Not horrible. Some transparent versions scratch easily. But honestly: for £6–£10, expectations should stay realistic. Metal/aluminum versions Much better. These: dissipate heat better, feel sturdier, feel more premium, survive abuse better. If the price difference is small: the aluminum versions are worth it. Reliability — honest truth This is where opinions split. Some people get: flawless performance for years, stable connections, no issues at all. Others experience: random disconnects, controller failures, drive sleep issues, cheap USB bridge chip behaviour. And honestly? Both are true. The reality: ORICO makes budget hardware. Most units work perfectly fine. Some units have mediocre controllers or QC inconsistencies. That’s why: casual users love them, power users sometimes avoid them. Heat handling This matters more than people realise. HDD use Usually fine. 2.5" laptop drives don’t get insanely hot. SSD use Can vary. Plastic models trap heat more. Aluminum versions are noticeably better for sustained transfers. If you: transfer huge files constantly, run games for hours, use it as a boot drive, metal versions are smarter. Cable quality — one annoying weakness This is a common complaint. The included USB cables are often: short, average quality, sometimes flaky. Raw truth: many people eventually replace the cable. Power issues — important truth Some USB ports don’t provide enough power for certain drives. Symptoms: clicking HDD, disconnecting, freezing, drive not appearing. This happens more with: old PCs, weak front-panel USB, cheap hubs, power-hungry drives. Usually not entirely the enclosure’s fault. Best uses for it Excellent for: reusing old laptop drives external game storage Steam Deck storage PS4 backups movies/media drives emulation ROM storage Windows installers/recovery cheap SSD portable drives Not ideal for: mission-critical backups enterprise use ultra-heavy sustained writes professional editing workflows Noise and vibration SSD: Silent. HDD: You’ll hear normal laptop-drive vibration. Plastic models can sometimes feel slightly hollow or rattly depending on fit. Nothing terrible though. Compatibility Usually works well with: Windows Mac Linux PS4 Xbox Steam Deck Android (sometimes with adapters) That broad compatibility is one reason these are so popular. Biggest hidden benefit This is honestly one of the cheapest ways to massively upgrade old tech. Example: old laptop SSD + ORICO enclosure = surprisingly fast portable SSD for under £15 total. That’s incredible value honestly. Biggest hidden downside People assume: “external drive enclosure = safe backup” Not always. Cheap enclosures can fail. USB cables fail. Drives fail. Important files should NEVER exist only inside one cheap enclosure. Final raw verdict The ORICO 2.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure is honestly one of the better cheap storage accessories around. The raw truth: very easy to use extremely cheap surprisingly fast compact and lightweight great for reusing old drives good value But: QC can be inconsistent cables are mediocre plastic versions feel budget not premium-grade hardware some controller/power quirks exist For normal people? They’re genuinely useful little devices. For professionals handling critical data daily? You’d probably want something higher-end. Final recommendation Buy it if: you want cheap portable storage you already have spare SSDs/HDDs you want a simple plug-and-play setup you want a cheap portable SSD solution you need game/media storage Skip it if: you need enterprise reliability you constantly move critical data you want ultra-fast NVMe speeds you expect premium build quality If you want the smartest setup: get the aluminum USB-C version, pair it with a decent SATA SSD, and you’ll have a genuinely solid budget portable drive setup. Very good A tier Provided below is a installation guide for the safest way to install your HDD without breakage THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT COME WITH A HDD THIS WAS BROUGHT SEPERATELY SOLEY FOR DEMONSTRATION

Not bad, but not great *UPDATED*
If what you want is a cheap HDD enclosure and you don't care too much about quality or design, then it's perfect. As a simple HDD enclosure, it's easy to open and install the HDD into, is fairly lightweight and works reliably. My complaint, however, is the build quality and design. The ripple textured design of the surface makes it feel very cheap in the hand and the quality of the plastic doesn't do much to help with that either. The plastic shell feels thin, cheap and brittle and has very little inside to limit vibration and shock. Overall, the HDD enclosure works, but I wouldn't buy another one based on the issues listed above. UPDATE The seller gave me a full refund on the item and promised to address my concerns with the product. Much more impressed!

High Quality Without the High Price
I recently purchased the ORICO 2.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure, and I'm very impressed with the quality, especially considering the price. It feels significantly more premium than other enclosures I've used in the same price range. The sturdy injection-molded plastic gives it a robust and durable feel, making me confident it can withstand everyday use. What truly sets this enclosure apart is its tool-free design. Popping the cover open and inserting a drive is incredibly simple and quick. Crucially, the internal electronics are securely housed within the case, eliminating the common worry of accidentally snapping a SATA connector. This is a huge plus for anyone who frequently swaps drives. The enclosure supports USB 3.0 to SATA III, ensuring fast data transfer speeds. I've tested it with both 2.5" 7mm and 9.5mm SATA HDDs and SSDs, and it handled both flawlessly. Whether you're upgrading an old laptop drive or need a portable storage solution, this ORICO enclosure is a fantastic choice. Highly recommended for its build quality, ease of use, and reliable performance.

Efficient and Affordable External Hard Drive Enclosure
I recently purchased the Orico 2.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure, and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed with its performance and value for money. Despite its lightweight feel, this enclosure is a powerhouse when it comes to transferring data. Inserting my old HDD into the enclosure was a breeze, and within moments, I had it connected to my laptop. While initially unrecognized, a quick run through Windows Disk Management sorted out the issue, and within minutes, I had a fully allocated 1TB drive ready to go. The Orico casing may feel a bit cheap due to its soft plastic construction, but let's be honest - it's the functionality that truly matters. And in that department, this enclosure shines. Its connectors and LED work flawlessly, and it even comes with a USB cable that, while short, is thick and well-screened. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The Orico 2.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure may not win any awards for its aesthetics, but it more than makes up for it with its efficient performance and unbeatable affordability. If you're in need of a reliable enclosure for your hard drive, look no further - Orico has you covered!

Good enclosure & great value at the promotional price
Good value for the price, easy install & was great to see built-in foam strip to help movement free install with additional foam provided if needed. It was simple plug n play on 2.5 SATA HDD on both windows & the android tablet. Whilst it's USB 3.0 spec but the read/write speed you'd actually get will depend on the HDD itself. Definitely recommended at its current promotional price, hard to recommend when at normal price as metal body options are available in the same price band where some even includ a case/cover.
