Refreshing update to old favourites
Have the old Bukhari/McBride books. They have stood up fairly well as general history and decent art works. I have only recently acquired some of the Pawley/Courcelle series. I like the expanded texts and Courcelles grittier art. Neither series talks enough about weapons for my tastes. For uniform detail nothing can compete with the Joineau series, but all of these are useful, enjoyable synoptic looks at the period militaria.

Mounted Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard
Although I prefer consulting larger scholarly works like Ronald Pawly's (1998) THE RED LANCERS, there are so few in print and that are written or translated into English that I am most often forced to seek information elsewhere. In their, now decades-long, quest to bring cost-conscious reference publications to the general public and especially to military historians, modellers, wargamers and painters, Osprey impresses. In Mounted Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard, Ronald Pawly, brings us his mastery of first-hand source-material of French Napoleonic cavalry. He is able to describe and interpret the broader historical context and at the same time get down to brass tacks with accurate descriptions of uniform and equipment minutiae so valued by hobbyists.I am beginning to appreciate more the artwork of Patrice Courcelle, whose style I was first introduced to in Francois-Guy Hourtoulle's SOLDIERS AND UNIFORMS OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS(2004). Here, however, his backgrounds are looser (a consideration that must be kept in mind with the publisher's tight production deadlines), but with well- detailed individual uniforms. In its quest to bring us a concise inexpensive reference, this Osprey publication succeeds and is recommended. I would, however, love to see Osprey complete a more extensive and all inclusive special publication on French Napoleonic cavalry taking advantage of Pawly's scholarship and love for the subject and Courcelle's greater depth as an artist.
