The entire previous seasons deserved Emmy nominations and awards in all categories but if this final season does not merit any, it will reflect on how poorly nominations and awards are chosen. The original film, Psycho was a classic and all of the sequels were poor imitations of Hitchcock's brilliance, to be sure. Nevertheless, the original film spawned a cult of Psycho fans, as I am, who have seen every sequel and the early 80's pilot TV film, also called, "Bates Motel" but which went nowhere after the pilot.The only choice for the producers of the current Bates Motel series was to create a prequel of which we all would be interested. How did Norman Bates descend into his Psychosis? What was the role of the mother in that? We have all wondered all about that all along. Now, we finally have the answer to our questions in a superbly drawn out series. It is somewhat like the story of the Titanic in that we know what the final outcome will be, the ship sinks and a lot of people die but we want to know how it all happened and who may have survived and how they did.We know from the original film that Norman's mother had died 10 years previous to the point where he had been implicated in some previously unsolved murders. We find out in the current, Bates Motel series how Norman started down his path, tried to be treated for it but escaped such treatment. We find out along this long series of the many murders that he has committed but for whom he always blames his mother. In this last and final series, we find out how Norman descends hand over fist into his madness, yet retains his "normal" profile all along.The casting of Vera Fromiga as the mother, Freddie Highmore as Norman and really, all of the other casting, could not have been better. The filming, lighting (mostly dark), music (lot's of "oldies") but also great scene music, all add to the greatness of this production. The very idea of this series is what is so great about it. You don't really need to be a deep fan of the original film, Psycho to appreciate it. You can even just get in on this final series and get into it. I promise you though that if you do, you will want to back track through the whole series and to the original film if you do!There is nothing like this series or nothing greater on TV now.
