Jensen's book sensitively opens up the career and life of one of the most influential writers of his time, one who influenced Ibsen, Strindberg, Rilke, Kafka and others. Jacobsen's life is fascinating, if sadly short. He translated Darwin and could have had a career in the sciences. Traipsing around bogs may have led to his contracting TB. In any case, the tale of his life, and of his devoted younger brother who was there for him as he lay dying stays in the mind. It's the kind of biography that brought me to read Jacobsen, enhancing his work in the process. It's first-rate work by Jensen.
