Early New England gravestone rubbings (Pictorial archive series) Paperback – 1 Jan. 1966

I have a different edition with a purple cover, the second from 2981 (1st was 1966.) It suggests the OG Classic by Forbes (1927) which is currently $229 so I’ll be in the special room at the library lol.Like all Dover books, it is rigorous, thorough, and an absolute classic. (Always get a Dover book at a thrift shop or estate sale, they are origins of the particular work in almost every field. I have maybe ten scientific ones.My friend and I spent an hour going through this, the abstract evolution I sent to mt abstract artist friend.If you take the time, it unfolds as a story, and some are deeply heartbreaking. The Masonic ones are the creepiest! I’m off on a treasure hunt this year, despite the other review I want to learn to recognize the artist and era upon inspection. (Definitely visit Mt. Auburn Cemetery if this is your jam. The variety of styles over time is wild.)A lot of these family names ring out as those of The Old Families in Salem.So many treasure hunts to do and see what has been lost since ‘81. They didn’t much care for a while exceot “certain” ones.

Although I wish there were more info on the location of the stones and more of the inscriptions about the people buried beneath them, the author makes it clear that this is a collection of graphics. And it's amazing! The rubbings are well-organized and well done. Altho rubbing is frowned upon these days, I'm glad he did what he did and provided a fabulous treasury that silently reveals so much about the society that created these remarkable examples of folk art.It was a steal at the price I paid.

This book is not what I was looking for. My hope was to see great depictions of grave rubbings, decorations and markings along with information on the symbols. the book is an outstanding collection of rubbings and photographs but extremely lean on information. Still if I can find what I'm looking for this would be a great companion book.

Very nice book.It will be a reference book for my use.
