The Penny Black was the first postage stamp used by a governmental agency. It allowed prepaid postage. Previously, postage for a letter was paid by the recipient. The profile of Queen Victoria was made from a drawing done while she still was a princess. This same profile was used on all British stamps for the rest of the 19th century. The black stamp was in use for only one year because its black color made it difficult to see the postal cancellation. It was replaced by a red version. This image is from the Ars Antigua collection of over 500,000 engravings and lithographs from the 16th to 20th century. Ars Antigua products have been sold at leading museums and institutions including the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Morgan Library (NY), Getty Center (Los Angeles), Frick Collection (NY), Los Angeles Philharmonic Store, Metropolitan Opera Shop, etc. These writing blocs will enhance all your business notes and business jottings.
