I would also have 2 large sponge filters.** A: Yes 2 of the 900s would do just fine but i would still add at least 1 sponge filter somewhere in the tank **Q: Will this work in a 40 gallon with fancy goldfish and do you just rinse the foam filters out or do you need to replace them ?** A: I would assume so I have all three attachments for my 70 gallon and it works fine I have that tank full of fancy goldfish and other fish **Q: Has anyone tried this filter?** A: I personally love this filter, its super quiet , keeps my water crazy clear with all the sponges in the filter and does a great job doing what it was designed to do, although i found myself not using the venturi system and i instead find myself loving the spray bar on the top of the housing.
