Almost a five star spear, had some quality issues that cost a star
This budget extension spear falls short when fully extended. The pole is not straight and bows slightly. This would make throwing even a short distance an exercise in luck. I took pictures of the pole fully extended at various angles, and if you look closely, you can see the bow. It's not catastrophic, but you can notice it when the spear is set to 6 feet. If you shorten the pole part, to about 4.5 feet, it causes the inner shaft to have more contact with the outer shaft, making for a more stable and straight connection. At 4.5 feet, it is straight enough, and solid enough, that you could throw it. Is that long enough? For spearing fish by the shore it is, and for hand spearing underwater it is too. It's long enough for crabbing . . . so all in all, I'm Ok with it, and that's not what cost the star. What cost the star is the screw socket mount on the end of the pole for the spear tip. The spear tips themselves are well made, although they do have a flaw in that you cannot really tighten the tips onto the pole as there are no flat segments on the spear tip screw-top where you can grab it with a wrench or plyers. The base is completely round, and tough to grab with any tool. This cost 1/2 a star because you need to tighten these tips very well or you can loose the tips and then the spear is useless. Another 1/2 star was lost because both tips mount slightly crooked. Getting the pole dead-straight doesn't help a whole lot if the spear tip is at an angle. It makes it impossible to get a clean straight-on hit, and you have to allow for the mounted angle of the tip when making your strike. Bummer. Could have been a five star winner, but instead it is a: Four Star Barbed Diving Spear
