The Bertrand Russell Collection

Some classics from the master
I've started getting back into philosophy recently and as I do I continue to be more and more impressed with Russell. Many of the works here are available in freeware format but a few, like the Intro to Mathematical Philosophy aren't. Well technically even that is but its an awful version where someone scanned the hardcopy and its hard to read and you can't annotate the way you can a real Kindle book. So I decided to spring for this book and am really glad I did. BTW, if you are interested in the foundations of math I highly recommend the Intro to Mathematical Philosophy. Its kind of like Chomsky's Syntactic Structures, very small but so dense with ideas it can take one... well me anyway... an hour just to read a few pages. But its worth the effort. Such fascinating ideas. The other thing I like about Russell is he wasn't just an ivory tower philosopher. He wrote some his most important early works from a jail cell for refusing to support the insanity of the first world war. He was also an atheist before it became trendy ;) Philosophy often gets a bad rap these days from many scientific people I know and i agree there is a lot of philosophy out there that deserves to be dissed. But Russell is one of the good ones, rigorous, analytical, and substantive. If you want a workout for your brain these works are as good as it gets.

The Immortal Bertie
Bertrand Russell is the best way, besides that awful essentialist Plato, of entering into the greatest of human pursuits: the pursuit of wisdom. Russell's works, especially the Problems of Philosophy, maintain their importance even now, considering Bertie knew next to nothing about the human brain. Fun reading.

Print-on-demand editorial attention atrocious
This review has nothing to do with author Bertrand Russell, but everything to do with the lack of quality control over the book's editorial details. The book is an inch-and-a-half thick, paperback, and has no page numbers on any of what must be seven to nine hundred pages. There is no front matter, e.g., a table of contents, nor is there any back matter, e.g., an index. There is no printing on the book spine, e.g., the title and author's name, but the publisher's name, FIRST RATE PUBLISHERS, is in half-inch type on the front cover. This publishing product is an insult to Russell's memory, and a disservice to his readers.

Still relevant
Still relevant over 60 years later. An excellent addition to your arsenal of knowledge. My first exposure to Russell was during my undergraduate years at Sewanee.

No table of contents, no page numbers
This is a fine book, since it brings together in one volume so many of Bertrand Russell's early and important writing. HOWEVER, since it is a print-on-demand issue, it has some problems: No page numbers, no table of contents, no index, AND type that's a bit too small. Still, I give it one star since it is such a valuable book.

This collection is good overall but some parts are better than others
The section on Russell's travels in post-revolutionary Russia are the most interesting part for me. The sections on consciousness and cognition are good but are very abstract due to the subject matter and therefore are much more difficult to comprehend. Overall this was a very long read but was worth the time It took to finish it.

Cheap print and low quality!
Very disappointed...The book has not even page numbers!! Very cheap quality and print. The cover picture is poor and pixelated bad resolution. There is no sign and name on the edge and bond. I was expecting at least a normal print published but this version just looks a student print!!

Bertrand Russell was a rare brilliant individual who appeared on the face of this world.
Please note anything that Bertrand Russell wrote was brilliant. He had one of the best minds this world this world has ever seen. Unfortunately I am unable to comment The Bertrand Russell Collection because I have not finished reading it.

Everyone should read this book
Accessible, fun, witty and challenging. You can't hope for a better teacher. There are so eye-opening statements about Greek, Roman and late 19th century despotism that make you think Russell is alive today and taking about the USA.You'll also learn that Plato and Aristotle probably got their fame due to having rather convenient philosophies from the perspective of kings and oligarchs (CEOs, corporate investors).Give yourself an upgrade, it's also on YouTube got free!

Hefty work will take some waxing through
On a admittedly short dip into this very comprehensive tome.Looks like a very comprehensive tome of Russell's work.

Great writer, horrible book edition.
The book doesn't even include an index or the names of the books included. Extremely difficult to understand the ordering.
