Loved this book so much that a bought second copy to gift to our children's school library. The story is captivating for anyone who enjoys learning about Mayan myths and chocolate. It should be noted that the original myth is presented with fictional embellishments but the author does a good joy of presenting a compelling story that makes you want to learn more about Mayan culture and history. Contains great illustrations and a good glossary.

Awsome book to read to your kids
Written in a way that you can make it really dramatic, my daughter was really into it, plus what kid is not interested in chocolate?

Found it lacking.
Interesting story, but seams to have lost something in translation. I have know idea if it is that the writer of this book is not a native speaker of English, maybe it is trying to write this story for a young audience, or just plain old bad writing. What ever it is the flow of the story is "bumpy," it just seems off to me. I had difficulty following the story and understanding the motivation of the characters to make the choices they did. Now all these words I am throwing around make me sound like an English major, I am not!!! I am just a homeschool mom that found this book to not work well with our family. You may like it, I found it lacking.

If you like chocolate, you'll like this book...
My class read this as part of their topic and we wrote reviews. One pupil wrote:I am in year 5 and we are learning about the Maya, so we read this book. It is an interesting folk tale about the cacao tree, which was stolen from Paradise by Kukulkan and given as a present to the Mayan people. One good thing about the story is what it told us about the Mayan culture and way of life. I learnt the types of gods they had and how they watched the Mayan people at night. Also, I found out why chocolate is special to the Mayan people. Finally, the brilliant illustrations show how the people lived and how their temples looked. I would recommend this book because it gives interesting facts in a fun way.

Good for use in the classroom
A simple version of the Mayan myth but entertaining for children. Have used it in school with my year 4 class and have also used it previously with 3 year. The basic language and sentence structure means that there is plenty for scope for work on improving it with more descriptive language and the illustrations are also brilliant for inspiration for writing pieces.
