Does the backplane have connections for hdd activity? my motherboard does not have as many headers as there are leds on the case.

no, this not have connections for hdd activity in the backplate, is in the front panel of the case the lights but comes with the cables for connect to the mobo.

This is a NAS computer case, the only difference from a “normal” computer case is that it includes 4x3.5” removable drive bays with a backplane that the drives plug into. This of a “dumb” backplane that only passes through SATA and power to the drives, there are no logic chips for RAID or anything. So yes, the drives will need to be plugged into a motherboard or RAID card. The case supports motherboards in the ITX form factor.

Does the backplane support SAS drives if the cables are replaced with SAS cables?

The backplane has no logic hardware, just traces for data and power. Data traces basically function as a dumb cable extension, don’t see why SAS protocol wouldn’t be supported.
