Well cushioned with a stable feel
I called New Balance when I saw several models here on Amazon. I was looking at a cheaper model that said it was a cushion model. New Balance suggested that I should try this model also so I ordered both pairs. Since I have pain from loss of my foot's natural cushion I immediately felt the difference with the other model. I liked the foot sock, and arch support but I did not want to live with the pain. I went for this one next. My initial thought was that it had the cushion and support but was even a little narrower than the other New Balance model. But, I had tried so many brands that I tried taking out the insole to this and putting in the New Balance orthotics I had purchased. As the shoes broke in, put the stock insole back and they still felt loose enough. This shoe is wider in the forefoot in the D width and my heels flop up and down as they don't taper to fit heels but I am looking to walk or stand, not run. I believe they are also a good running shoe so I plan to line the heels and speed up my walking as my feet feel better. I believe this model is worth trying, especially if you don't have problem feet. From here the real runners can take over.

Great running shoes for low-normal arches & minor overpronation
These are the best running shoes I've ever owned. I was led towards these after visiting a wonderful local shoe store after having them analyze my foot pressure patterns, and have since repurchased them on Amazon. I have a tendency to over-pronate a little bit, and have repeatedly played with heat-molded or other insoles to run without either knee or back pain. I don't have to use any after-market insoles with these, as the shoe fits and performs perfectly without them. The sizing is customary for running shoes, in which you generally go 1 US size higher than your casual shoes. My feet run a little narrow with low-normal arches and minor overpronation, and I wear a 44EU/11-11.5 US shoe in casual shoes. With my standard *thick Thorlo running socks* I was fitted for a 12.5 (D), which fit like a glove but had a tendency to rub a bit on my longest toe with long runs. I actually repurchased a 13 (D) recently, that gave me a little extra room in the toe box, and am still very happy with the shoe.Remember to take your anticipated running socks into consideration when you size your running shoes!

Perfect fit and feel.
OK so before I leave the FB I want to say that all I am is just a regular person and not being paid or some how connected to NB.I've been buying their shoes for over 20 years now for work cause they were made in the US and a decent lower priced sneakers for work that lasted & I didn't mind them getting worn out & beat up being on my feet for a lot of the job I needed something that wouldn't hurt.So I paid $92 for these so I would have a better quality walking shoe to get some exercise & less pounding on the foot. But with out a doubt for me this is the best fitting 11-2E shoe I've ever worn from all the other types & brands I've tried. The fit & feel was 99.99% perfect, holy crap it was like wearing marshmallows on my feet, no break in needed. Nicely constructed and great insert this has to be the best shoe I've ever bought. Whomever designed this my hat off to ya! Thanks.............M

So Far, So Good Update
So far, so good. Nice shoe for the price. Comfortable. Still too new for a complete evaluation. I put a lot of miles on my shoes, so we shall see how they hold up. I have noticed that the quality of New Balance running shoes with respect to durability is not what it used to be five years ago. I buy New Balance because I have a wide foot and require a very wide toe box. New Balance shoes have always fit me better than other brands.UPDATE: Best shoe for fit and comfort that I have had in years. Actually, I have purchased two additional pairs. One caveat. One of the shoes appears to be developing a slight tear in the fabric. Confirms my earlier comment regarding the durability of New Balance shoes. Not what they used to be. Downgrading from a 5 to a 4.

comfy shoes
These shoes fit well, although I ordered a half-size up from what Amazon suggested. I had version I of this shoe in an 11 and 1/2, and they are a wee bit small, so I went with the 12. Glad I did. They shoes look good, in my opinion, and they are pretty comfortable. I needed a cushioned, neutral shoe, and these fit the bill. I have several large bone spurs on both feet, and I limp due to a knee I tore up many years ago. When I find a shoe that works with all of that, I stick with it. my only complaint is that the tongue is a little shorter than in my two previous 840's. The problem is not nearly as bad as it is in my 993s. I would definitely buy them again.

Successor to the 883 with an SL-2 last?
I am a die hard of the SL-2 last. This company's decision to discontinue the 883 was a huge bummer. Then I heard this new version of the 840 would incorporate the SL-2 last instead of the previous sl3. I ordered it and have been wearing it for a couple of months now. My verdict: not quite as roomy as the 883. The toe box is a tad narrower, not anything too constricting though. The height of the instep is what bothers me the most, but it is wearable even for my tall feet. If you are looking for a successor to the 883 in terms of fit, give it a try. While not quite as comfortable, it just might fit your needs. I cannot comment on it's attributes as a running shoe, just on it's fit.

One size down from standard size for people with narrow feet
Great and comfortable shoes the first time I ran with them inside an indoor padded track!! One of my feet are narrowed sized 10.5 while the other one is 11; however, I got the 11 size narrow (B) and they fit perfectly. I normally get the standard size when buying regular NB shoes which I have done for several pairs, so I'm familiar with the brand. The main reason I chose the B size (narrow) for these running shoes is because there is more toe room than normal and it's appears to be designed for wider feet, so I figured I would go one down from the standard size. Also, my decision was based on what I read from the product description and other people's comments. If you aren't familiar with this brand, I would encourage you to try out a pair to ensure you get the best fit.

Finally, a replacement for 817.
Was looking for a New Balance equivalent to MR817MC. The manufacturer keeps changing model numbers and not doing a good job of matching the characteristics of the older models to the new ones. These provide a good support for my high arch plus I can get them in my size (8 4E). They are light and the soles are rounded so that they don't slap the ground. I was told that the model M1540WB1 was the replacement to the 817, but they did not feel right and I was uncomfortable in them. This new model is definitely the proper replacement.

Very comfortable shoes.
It’s for running, but we bought it for long walks, because they are light. My husband is happy.

Best orthotic shoes I bought so far
Before purchasing them, I read a few reviews from many websites. So many people insisted that the shoes have plenty of space for toes. Wow, they weren't kidding! It's the best orthotic shoes I bought so far. I'll probably order another one soon (one for outdoors, one for work).
