good story
I'd already read book 2 and that gave me an insight to the characters. Although there is the main story there is also Derrick's story which carries into book 2 and I presume book 3 as it wasn't resolved in book 2. So technically this book ends in a cliffhanger. I enjoyed book 1 and it's many twists and turns.

The last lie told
I found the characters fascinating if a little disjointed in the finish. Would have liked some definition with her husband but clearly that's for another day.

Complicated but interesting
I initially found it quite hard to get into this novel as there are a lot of characters and plot twists to contend with however around two thirds through things suddenly clicked and I quite enjoyed the ending! The main character Finley is recovering from the murder of her husband and her rape the previous year and is shocked to discover that all may not have been as it seemed with him. She works as a private investigator with Jack after having a breakdown while working with the district attorneys office. She is sympathetically written and well developed. The plot of the book is that a convicted murderer suddenly states that he did not kill one of his victims and Fin and Jack investigate why. Some of the twists I did find overly complex and confusing but all in all a good read and definitely did not guess the ending.

good start to a new series
A well-paced piece of crime writing with enough twists and turns to keep me interested from start to finish and a nice sub-plot to set up the next book. Finley is a likeable character, as are Matt and Jack who I hope will get a bigger part in future books. A series to watch!

Very good First Read- recommended
This is one of the few First Reads that I can describe as being very good. The book is the start of a series and I shall definitely be purchasing the next instalment. The book is well written and I assumed, wrongly, that the author had a background in criminal justice, due to the seemingly accurate law descriptions.Finley, main character, was a prosecutor with the District Attorney. Following the murder of her husband and consequent poor behaviour she is employed by a defence lawyer- Jack- as a defence investigator.5 years previously a man was imprisoned for killing a wealthy, well known man. He’s now seeking a retrial on the grounds that he didn’t kill the man, a member of the man’s family was responsible. The family, mother Sophie and identical twins Cecelia and Olivia are what I describe as dysfunctional. Finley is tasked with delving into the whole scenario to find the truth. This proves difficult because the twins cannot be truly identified by anyone apart from their mother. The storyline is complicated, with various ‘others’ involved. Running alongside the main theme is the murder of her husband and snippets of information are disclosed which ultimately lead into a second book. The justice system in America is obviously very different from UK. Investigations here are done by the police. Accepting the differences, the plot speeds along. The main characters are well drawn and will no doubt be developed further.
