Outstanding
This is a great bowl for mixing my pigments and making pigments. This is so thick and sturdy. The tool is amazing and its unsmoothed end makes it so easy to mash up. I love the color and how easy it is to clean up. Heavy duty piece of equipment lol. I got it for a heck of a deal and it was way beyond worth it everything I hoped for and more from my very first petal and mortor

It's Yuuge!
I didn't realize how huge and heavy this thing would be. At first I wasn't sure because of the large size, but now I love it! Grinds dry whole spices to powder with almost no effort because of how massive it is. Great for making your own flavorful spice mixes.

FINALLY!! The perfect mortar and pestle!!
I have been searching for a large, solid, unpolished on the inside mortar and pestle for a LONG time. Most are either too small, made of a material I don't want (marble is cool but not as hard as granite and gets stained by turmeric when making curry pastes). This is finally the answer! The thing is large (7" outer edges if you get the large one)!! It holds about 2 cups and it big enough to crush medicine, salt and paper, make garlic and ginger pastes and curry pastes for a table-sized meal. FINALLY!!!!Some of the reviewers are critical of this item. Those people have never used a mortar and pestle. As with ANY mortar and pestle made of anything other than wood, before use, you MUST properly season it, or it won't work, and you'll grind pieces of rock into your food. Yuck. After you purchase it, put a quick google search of "how to season a mortar and pestle", and you'll see you have to put in a little elbow grease. We spent 24 seasoning ours, and we are SOOOOOOO happy with it. I've already used it for grinding peppercorns, garlic into paste, and some chili peppers into powder. AWESOME!!!! And for the price, if it breaks, I won't be too sorry to have to buy another. GREAT product. A kitchen essential. Hoping it'll last a lifetime!

arrived with broken in half Pestle possible Bad packaging
Arrived in the mail with a broken in half Pestle had to stop by hardware store to buy granite/marble glue spent the extra money because return and exchange would have been too long to process for the project that I needed for. After gluing the pestle did its job!

Works great
Nice heavy weight; you don't have to focus to much on keeping it in place when grinding down items since it's nice and heavy. Large size good for guac and bulk crushing that's manageable.

Greatly sturdy, heavy-duty kitchen tool
There's a lot to be said for doing things the old-fashioned way. . . it brings us back toward our roots -- and somewhere back there in time, our ancestors used tools just like this granite mortar and pestle to grind herbs, spices, and other things (except theirs was built-in to the granite or rock, whereas ours are conveniently portable). I am very impressed with the weight and size of the mortar -- and love how the inside is rough to allow the breaking down of fibers and leaves. The bottom of the pestle is also textured roughly like this to help in the breakdown of materials. This will definitely give your arm a workout!! I've used it for dried flowers, seasonings, and breaking down fruits into a puree. It is fun to use and is a great reminder of how hard our ancestors had to work to bring good meals to the table. I've included a photo with a quarter on the edge of the bowl to show scale, though I'm not sure the angle of the photo does it justice! If you've been on the fence about getting one, now's the hour -- get this, and you will not be disappointed.

Effective, efficient, and beautiful.
I've thoroughly enjoyed using this mortar and pestle. It's a good size, can find around 2-3 cups in volume. Picture attached is the difference between red curry paste attempted in a food processor vs w mortar and pestle. It very quickly smears things to my desired consistency, vs running the food processor for prolonged period of time and still having a fine chop. More recently have been mashing ginger, green onion, garlic and salt together to go on chicken or fish--super tasty and simple mix!Seasoning it was fairly straightforward, spent 20-30 minutes or so pulverizing dry rice followed by salt w oil to be sure there wasn't any rock dust still. It's heavy, but then it is a rather large chunk of rock! It's beautiful too, I am very happy w my choice of the dark granite.

PERFECT ! No cracks. Great size shape and weight.
I cannot express how happy I was to open the box and see this mortar and pestle. Perfect. The right color the right shape. I have looked for a very long time for "THE ONE" and this is it. It is surprisingly heavy. I can understand how one could have been dropped in transit and broken. Mine wasn't so I am happy. I am also satisfied that with the " proper seasoning " it will do just what I need it to without grit, sand or flaking into my food. If not I will be back with an edit. Thanks to Fox Run for an item that was exactly what was hoped for and expected.

The media could not be loaded. I Understand why there are quite a bit of mixed reviews for this product. 1. The reviews for the black granite seems to be combined with the white granite which I ordered. 2. The white granite has more of an unfinished surface on our outside and rim which leaves dust and sand on your hands when handled. 3. People are not seasoning it properly and assume that its ready to use out of the box.Overall I am quite satisfied with the product, though it does take quite a bit of breaking in to season the surface so it's ready to use. A lot of people online recommended using rice, but i found it quite inificent since you waste a lot of your energy pounding and grinding to the right size to get things going. I found that Corse salt and oil worked quite well.

Not sure its real granite. You get what you pay for.
Do not like this pestle and mortar. I don't think its real granite. Seems more like formed cement. The pattern is too consistent; looks exactly like the picture. Made in China. Looks like they sent me something someone else returned. The box it came had signs of wear and and that it had been opened multiple times. If I wanted something used, I would have bought it second hand. The outside is quite rough. Really rough. So its a bit hard to hold. Under side is smooth, and the pestle is smooth. Waaaay thicker than it needs to be. It is 4.25"tall but the inside chamber is only 2.25"deep. Its about 6.5"wide in diameter but the inside chamber is about 4.30"wide (diameter). So there is 1"inch of thickness all around. The pestle is 6.5"long; 2"diameter base thickest part, and tapers to 1"thickness(diameter) on the top thinest part.Needless to say, I am not pleased. Canadian Tire seems to have a better one on their shelf. I might try that one.I do not recommend it.

Gorgeous Item
I added a quarter cup of water and then ground off and on for a total of about an hour to remove any tool marks and rough edges. The water turned into a gray slurry. After cleaning it out and drying, I added cumin seeds, coriander seeds, green cardamom, some cloves and a star anise. With a couple pounds and some circular grinding, it became a wonderful powder in only 45 seconds or a minute. I put it though a sieve onto a plate and all that was left were some bits of the cardamom pod. The result was even finer than my coffee grinder. Looking forward to using this on Thai curries, Pestos and spices for many years to come!

Exceptionally Happy Mortar Owner
Super impressed with this pestle and mortar. Just arrived yesterday. Amazon seemed a little lazy with the bubble packing, the huge weight sliding back and forth.. Base is wide and stable. Very heavy and doesn't move when you are grinding. Immediately started to condition it by pounding and grinding rice until it was a fine powder. Conditioned with garlic and spices. And finally tested it out on some Thai chili's, I couldn't believe how beautifully it pulverized the chili seeds and made the most amazing chili butter I've ever made. I don't know how I went this long before buying a pestle and mortar. Happy I didn't go smaller than the 6" option. Hoping for no defects or broken pestle that I've seen in pictures.

Cast Iron Mortar and Pestle 7" inches is WORTH your money!
This is so worth the cost!! It is big for a 7" inch mortar and pestle. My wife loves cast iron! She says it lasts forever!! She also loves the quality and how well packaged it was. The weight of it though needs to be held with both of her hands lol. It arrived in excellent condition. Definitely pleased!!! This is an awesome item to have in your kitchen. I was expecting it to be smaller in size but this mortar and pestle is HUGE! My wife sat here laughing hysterically over the size of it and she was amazed that for the price that was paid, it was much larger than we both originally thought. I ain't complaining! The wife isn't complaining! She is one happy woman.
