Q: The instructions don't say what to do with the sponges. Does it attach to the filter on the bottom somehow?

If you detach the bottom you can see where the sponges aka filters go. However mine already had a sponge in so I assume the rest are spares. That said the instructions are horrible - clearly not of an English speaker. Nevertheless we are satisfied for the money.
