Q: Do the handles stay staionary as you use the roller or do they spin with it?

Black handles stay stationary and do not spin. The blue rollers spin freely. Works great!

Q: Can this be used to massage muscles and how does it work?

Q: How do you clean the spaces in between the rollers if it gets dirty?

Take either one of the end pieces off - everything will come off after that and you can clean the entire roller. It's very easy to then put all the pieces back on put the end piece on last of course. Mine comes apart all the time probably because I use it so much so that's how I found this out.
