GENERAL ELECTRIC GE RR7 REMOTE CONTROL 21-30V-AC RELAY

Our house is now 64 years old. When built, the builder installed the GE low-voltage relay-switched system for lights and some outlets. Over the years, renovations meant some lighting was changed to direct AC power switching. However, many of the lights remained on the GE relay-switched system. There are some real advantages to this system - particularly if you want multi-way switching; the ability to turn lights on or off (or outlets, for that matter) from multiple locations. The relays are latching so once energized by the wall switch, they do not draw power to stay in the on- or off-state. We have two of the original multi-room switches that use a rotary knob to select which room or lights you want to turn on or off. A very early implementation of what is now part of a "smart home" system. In fact, current versions of this system enable control over a wired or wireless network and some third-party vendors make add-on electronics to let you control things from a mobile phone or tablet. These systems can then be integrated into a "smart home" system. My only complaint is that it can be very difficult to replace defective relays (they do fail after years - some of the relays in our system are original, so they've been in operation for 60 years) as the mounting brackets had holes for the relays in front and back rows. Without removing the relays in the "front" row from those holes, it can be nearly impossible to replace a relay in the back row. I just had to do this. I did not have to disconnect any of the relays in front, but I did struggle to get them out of their bracket holes. The newer systems have a single row of holes as far I can see on the current Web pages that describe the various systems. The other problem was that manipulating the replacement relay into the back row resulted in one of the control wires breaking off it's soldered connection. Fortunately, I was able to reach that connection with my soldering iron and solder it back in place. A better connection system for the control wires would be a good idea for GE. They did replace the bare wire ends on the control wires with a push-on connector, so if you have the newer mounting boxes, they will simply plug in. But a connector on the relay body itself for the control wires would avoid the problem of bending the control wires around so much to get the relay in place if you are replacing a relay in an older system.

Worked just fine. Well packaged arrived in perfect condition.

So blessed to locate this part! Not expensive at all!

Showed up with a corner of the brown plastic body broken off. But fortunately it wasn't a piece that would keep it from working. I was able to super glue it back together, like nothing was ever wrong with it.
