As far as I can remember from my youth working in a pretentious bar, these are called Lewis Bags - a heavy thick canvas bag used for crushing ice. We used to use something similar to a one-handled rolling pin but this set has a wooden mallet.I always used to wonder why the bar owner insisted on the bag instead of an electric blender until one day I tried the blender - it reduces the ice to water almost immediately and you can’t judge when the ideal ice chip size is reached. With this bag and mallet, not only is it incredibly satisfying, but the ice remains dry and icy, and it’s quite easy to keep bashing until you get the crushedness you want. These are a delight to use - the bag is thick and very strong (like the ones we used in the bar) and the flat-faced mallet is much better than the rolling pin affair. The bag has insulative properties and keeps the ice icy during bashing.A really nice set - comes with two bags and one mallet - essential for anyone wishing to make the best authentic cocktails.When this set arrived, my partner and I had an enormously fun afternoon making mint juleps (mint syrup made the day before, whisky juleps for me, gin juleps for her), until we had to stop for reasons of hand-eye coordination deficiencies.

Does what it’s supposed to do and doesn’t look hideous stored in the kitchen like most plasticky modern-looking alternatives.

These canvas bags are really nicely made and much better than a plastic alternative and certainly better than my previous attempts to do the same with carrier bags, which just gets very messy. Hammer isn't too large which makes this set easier to store away. Great price, really happy.
