It is artificial leather. It may not hold up as well as genuine leather over time or feel quite the same, but for the use of a casual backpack it does just fine. I've owned the bag for a couple months now and have had no issue with the material itself. however, the handle at the top can start to rip at the seams through extensive use and weight in the bag. I would still recommend the bag but if you are looking for something genuine i suggest looking elsewhere.
