excellent resource for CS and school assessments.
Update #2 - 08/06/2023 - I miss using this book dearly. The beauty of where this book shines is in creating a differential diagnosis by using specific questions and create a case presentation.----------------Update #1This is not a basic book and approaches the high yield advanced style question for history taking. Ofcourse you can't become a master by just reading it once. It takes time for knowledge to consolidate and if you use this resource on a regular basis and compare your notes from the day you started, you will witness how far you have improved not only in your history-taking skills but your overall SOAP note.Great resource even though the Step 2 CS has been discontinued. Where this book shines is how it explains the basic structures of questions to focused questions that cover the ROS.I have been using this book for the past year and a half and prepare with this book before I enter the exam room.I am genuinely surprised by how underrated this book is. I highly recommend this resource.07/23/22Update #2: How do I use this book?1. I would go over the school notes for a particular case.2. Open this book and go over the particular chapter: This step takes time as questions to a specific complaint rule in or out differentials (Essential to becoming a thinking clinician).3. Go over First Aid for step 2 CS cases specific scenarios.4. Create a case-specific history script based on SOAP note format.hope this helps,Have a great day!

This is one of those great books that is not easily replaced with other books ...
There are few books I still use after having purchased them in school. This is one of those great books that is not easily replaced with other books or online tools. I don't use it all the time, but when I do, I am always pleased. It is excellent at expanding my differential when I have a patient coming in with a vague or general complaints. If you work in primary care, I think it is worth a look. Its not that expensive and its price is well under the value I get from it in practice. Every so often I will just pick it up and look at the concise section on "nausea" or "headache" to help broaden my considerations. It provides algorithms for diagnosis and some information on % of eventual diagnosis based on chief complaint. Great book.

This is a fantastic book, and an excellent supplement to the Bate's ...
PA student here. This is a fantastic book, and an excellent supplement to the Bate's physical exam book. Lists the most pertinent and digestible information, while maintaining a thorough and systematic approach to diagnosing your patient. The differential diagnosis lists are great, and the chapters are short enough that you can easily cover an entire unit in an hour (or less). Especially love the patient vignettes at the end of the chapters, and only wish there was a way to access more questions! All in all, great book, and I wish there were more like it for the rest of didactic year!

Excellent tool for DDx!
This is easily the most useful book I own for helping me sort out differential diagnoses based on patients' histories and symptoms. I am an adult NP student, 2nd year, and my current immersion in an internal medicine practice has proved that most diagnoses are indeed made on patient history. This book is extremely helpful!

Useful for medical diagnostic courses
The Patient History provides useful advice about how to figure out the differential diagnosis, and how to pick the correct diagnosis. The book includes a lot of tables which may include, for example, a column of symptoms and a column for the differential. If you prefer text to tables, this book may not be ideal: while it contains useful text, the tables include info not in the text. Keep in mind that this is not a pathophysiology textbook, and as such, the chapter on headaches won't include a lot of material about what causes headaches--just how to diagnose different types of headaches. Overall, this book is most useful for medical courses focusing on the diagnostic process.

Excellent book
Highly recommended.Pros:1. Very good algorithms, explained via flocharts, to determine diagnosis2. Explanation and use of likelihood ratios in diagnostics3. Easy to read and use.Cons:None really. Compared to other books I looked at, this was by far the best choice.
