Q: will this work on window 8

I had Windows 8 and it worked perfectly. Then I downloaded Windows 8,1 and it still worked like a charm.

Q: we have stereo slides--each slide is roughly half the width of a 35mm slide. will this unit accomodate it?

The "window" or surface that can be scanned is 38 x 26 mm. If one of the sides of your slides (not the picture, but the frame) is between 49 mm and 38 mm, or between 49 and 26 mm, you should be able to fit them in the plastic frames supplied for the common 35 mm slides. The thickness of your slides should not be thicker than the common slides.

Q: Does the entire original image get copied or does it get "cropped" a bit?

The entire image gets copied. Very impressive system.

Q: Can I just feed the scanned image to my laptop(Mac) and us my usual editing software on it?

I just gave the Veho VFS-002m a try on my PC laptop, just plugged it into a USB and it worked just as it did on my desktop. The condition of your negative will be reflected in the image you capture; dirty or scratched negative means a dirty or scratched looking image. I hope this info is of some help.
